first modern charting of the city, begun in 1868. The collection of photographs made of sixteenth to twentieth century maps and blueprints on Buda, Pest and Óbuda in archives and libraries abroad also deserves mention. We have begun the establishment of a collection of photographs and microfilms on the own material of the Archives, or the archival material on the city, preserved at other places. According to legal rules and the organizing statute of 1873 the Archives keeps the documents securing city rights (20 running metres) as well. The overwhelming majority of the records is arranged and may be used for research without any difficulty. Lacks are mostly due to the ravages of war (e.g. the records of the prefecture of District I up to 1944 and those of several council, or respectively burgomaster's sections from 1926 to 1944, or from 1927 to 1944 have been entirely destroyed). The Archives executed selections in the material later than 1873 and with the utmost care only (mainly in the records of the military and domicile sections); selections made before giving over the material for archival custody, or annihilations, however, caused considerable damage in several instances, both in the feudal and capitalistic, and socialistic periods, respectively (e.g. scarcely anything was left from the tax assessment books of Pest city or from the records of the Budapest council tax section between 1873 and 1879).
