socialist period of its history, than it was in its feudal or bourgeois ones. Essentially it has remained the scientific institution and the important base of historical science, as it was in the bourgeois period, with enlarged and also modified administrative tasks, responding to the new demands of research and information. The history of the Archives outlined above also explains the present organisation. Its supervising authority has remained in the socialist period the earlier Ministry, t>r its successors under various names. At present it is called Ministry of Culture. The Hungarian National Museum which used to be the framework of its activity from 1935, ceased to exist in 1950. In this year the National Centre of Archives came into being, a specialized middle authority between the Ministry and the archival institutions in its competence, which include the Hungarian National Archives. In 1956 the National Centre of Archives was directly attached to the Council of Ministers and in 1957 transformed into the archival section of the Ministry of Culture, working as Archives Board from 1968. The Ministry exercises its supervising authority through the Archives Board in special archival questions. The present structure of the Archives is the following: Director 1 person Secretariat and bureau 7 persons Finance department 21 persons Library 3 persons Central research room 5 persons Section I 13 persons Section II 12 persons Section III 12 persons Section IV 11 persons Section V Photographic group 16 persons Restoration group 12 persons Preservation group 9 persons Cabinet for source studies 4 persons Record cadaster 2 persons 128 persons
