Dr. Miklós VERES A PANNONHALMI BENCÉS FŐAPÁTSÁG LEVÉLTÁRA (ARCHIVES OF THE PANNONHALMA BENEDICTINE ARCHABBEY) 9090 PANNONHALMA. Tel. 5. Director: Dr. Lajos CSÓKA The bulk of the archival material has developed of the records securing the material and legal status of the archabbey. The first record is an interpolated copy from about 1100 of the foundation charter of St. Stephen of 1002. The most valuable material dates from the end of the eleventh century to the Mongol invasion. The abbot Oros (1207-1242) was outstanding in issuing documents. At his death the abbey had already 160 charters. He let the Liber Ruber made, a collection containing the copies of the 60 most important papal and royal charters pertaining to the abbey. At about this time, in 1202 the convent began to work as an authenticating authority, the records of this activity were managed separately. The books of copies and the indices to the records were elaborated at about 1700. The material of the Archives was preserved in safety in spite of the ravages of the Mongolians, the Turks and both World Wars. It suffered no considerable damage during the past thousand years. So it is perhaps the only essentially complete and unhurt archives of the country, the material of which was increased by the records of several Benedictine abbeys and some families and illustrious persons in the meantime. The Archives are maintained by the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma. *
