A Veszprémi Székeskáptalan Levéltára (Archives of the Veszprém Cathedral Chapter)

The archival material totals 257 running metres. The bulk of the archival material is made up by the records of church government, beginning with 1698. The most valuable part is the series of canonical visitations. Of these that of the Pápa archdeanery is the oldest (from 1698). During the rule of the bishop Márton PADÁNYI BIRO, between 1745 and 1755 14 volumes of canonical visitations were noted down, giving the social and economic cross-section of the diocese, irrespective of religion. Equally outstanding source value is attached to the eighteenth century "conscriptiones animarum". Among the records of church administration those on testaments, schools, monks, foundations and subsidies form separate groups according to subjects. The so-called Roller archives contain 700 selected and separately managed records, connected with Roller's episcopal activity (1762-1773). The so-called records of estate management are partly the separately preserved property records of the bishopric, partly those of the episcopal directorate and of the estates (Veszprém, Karád and Sümeg). The archival material is arranged on medium level. Pál Lukcsics has written a survey on the archives in Levéltári Közlemények (Archival Bulletin) vol. 1931 nos 1-2. Research in the archives is possible from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Thursday.^ The repository has no reference library, but researchers may use the episcopal library. Archivist: Dr. József KÖRMENDY Veszprém Chapter Archives preserve a most precious archival material, though this is but a fragment of its former riches. From time immemorial the archives had been in a locality, connected with the sacristy of the cathedral, and it shared the fate of the latter. The records were scattered by the army of the Count Palatine Péter CSÁK in 1276, many of them were annihilated or damaged. In 1381 the archives sufferred great damage by the
