On the basis of decree-law No. 27 of 1969 the Minister of Culture declared the archives maintained by the Presidium of the MTA a special archives in November 1970, declaring the principle that it shall become an independent unit of organization, which is still in course of real­isation owing to difficulties of storage and administration. The present organizational situation of the Archives is the following: the Archives of the Academy works as an independent department of the MTA Library, directed by the head of the Archives. The repository and its head are responsible for their work to the director of the Library and through him to the leader of the Section of Social Sciences. Professional-technical control is exercised by the Archival Board of the Ministry of Culture directly. The inner organization is given by the types of the archival material: the Archives is bound to take over, to manage, to preserve, to treat and to make accessible the 1.records, 2.photographs and 3.sound records. These functions are coordinated and directed by the leader. Beside the main functions the repository has other duties as well: administrative tasks, the control of the record management of the organs in the competence of the Archives, library work, inner archival administration, tasks of the central registry, etc. The personnel consists of four full time, three part time collaborators. The repository has no financial and technical sections of its own. Its financial affairs are managed by the Finance Department of the MTA Library, the technical works (security microfilming, photocopies, xerox copies, bookbinding) are done by the Reprographic Section of the Library. The collecting interest of the Archives of the Academy embraces the archival material of the leaders, the central corporative and official apparatus, the research institutes and research groups of the MTA, that of the scientific associations and societies supervised by the MTA, the enterprises and servicing enterprises and social institutions of the MTA. Accordingly the main sections of the archival groups of the repository are the following: The first section of archival groups contains the records of the central organs and leaders of the MTA and those of the Scientific Qualifying Com­mission. From the foundation (1825) till the end of 1949 the records of the MTA are preserved in the Manuscript Section of the MTA Library, totalling about 18 running metres.
