a_hunyadiak_cimereslevelei_1447_1489_0115_bent.indd 284 2019.01.16. 10:29:21 �e patents of arms of the Hunyadis In this volume prepared within the framework of the King Matthias Memorial Year of 2018 we publish forty-six grants of arms issued by János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary and by his son, King Matthias I (Corvinus) of Hungary, besides the one given to János himself in 1553. �ey are mostly published before, but there are several charters which are yet unpublished and three copies, which are unknown to the scienti�c literature at all. �e main goal of this volume is to present a comprehensive collection of grants of arms by the members of the Hunyadi family, supplemented with good-quality illustrations of the charters printed in colour, correcting mistakes and �aws of the earlier literature. �e Latin or sometimes German texts of the charters are published along with their brief summary, basic data of the preserved documents and a list of related bibliography. �e charter texts are followed by short studies dealing with the history of the grantees and their families, or even of the charters themselves, just as any genealogical, diplomatical, sigillographical or heraldical aspects worth mentioning. �e publication is the result of the combined work of the associates of several Hungarian, Slovakian, Croatian, Austrian, Romanian, Swiss and Czech archives, museums, research institutes and universities. * * * �e grants of arms to be found in this volume are the following: I. Letters patent of János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary granting arms to the nobleman Miklós Pogány, citizen of Torda. Timişoara, 13th October 1447. II. Letters patent of János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary granting arms to the nobleman and master Péter, son of the late Jakab Berekszói and his relatives. Turda, 15th February 1448. III. Letters patent of János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary granting arms to Adorján Félegyházi, vice-castellan of Buda, and through him to his brothwers, Sebestyén and Balázs and his relatives, Gáspár and János. Buda, 7th April 1449. IV. Letters patent of János Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary, in which (upon the request of the literate Bálint Tordasi, who appeared before the Regent’s court) he transcribes the grant of arms issued by King Sigismund of Hungary on 15th August 1417 to the noblemen Mihály, lector of Szepes, Miklós, archdeacon of Sasvár, János, canon of Esztergom, Vác and Buda, and through them to János and István, sons of Gergely Békási, to Bálint Tordasi and to a certain István (the charter being at that time in possession of István, citizen of Buda). Buda, 13th April 1449. V. Letters patent of King Ladislaus V of Hungary granting an augmentation of arms to János Hunyadi, the hereditary Count of Beszterce. Bratislava, 1st February 1453. VI. Letters patent of King Matthias I of Hungary granting arms to Mihály Czobor of Szentmihály, a nobleman of County Bodrog. Buda, 12th May 1458. VII. Letters patent of King Matthias I of Hungary granting arms to Bálint Bakóc of Erdőd, Provost of Titel, chaplain of the Palatine Mihály Ország of Gút, and through him to his brothers, Miklós, Tamás and János.
