The Canonical Body and University Studies 173 history of the Esztergom cathedral chapter in the 15th century. The second volume of the planned series will offer a glimpse, within certain practical limits of course, into the everyday activities of those canons who, figuring in the said letters of attorney, were examined in the present book. For the private archives of the cathedral chapter have preserved for us another unique source, which, according to its title, is a detailed register of those expenses which had been paid both in Hungary and abroad, in the notorious case about the Sasad tithes, between 1452 and 1464. Luckily from the perspective of later research, the scribe of the registers not only recorded the individual sums, but also put down ample information with regard to the process itself. The source, which can thus be regarded as the „chronicle" of the case, will be published in extenso in the second volume. Yet prior to it, the preceding phases of the famous lawsuit are described, and then the events from 1452 to January 1465 revealed on the basis of the events referred to in the registers and of those charters which were issued in the course of the process. The planned third volume of the series will offer a thorough analysis of the registers of the canonical visitation traditionally assigned to the year 1397. With the help of the first two volumes, based on the archontology of the Esztergom chapter I have prepared and on the available charter material, I will analyse in detail the reasons which underlay the undertaking of the visitation, as well as its aims and, of course, its date. I will also examine the extent to which its contents correspond to the picture of the chapter which emerges from other sources. The volume, accordingly, will contain the full text of the registers edited along the most modern criteria of scientific source publication. Thus completed, the amount of information I have gathered about the late medieval history of the Esztergom cathedral chapter, mainly from an archontological and prosopographical point of view, will hopefully serve as a basis for future research and for a concise history of the chapter itself.
