PRINCIPLES OF EDITING In this edition, charters are dated and sorted in chronological order, and to each of them was added a serial number. For charters which are known only by mention, we have tried to determine the date as precisely as possible. Those charters that can be dated only by year are put at the end of that year, after the charters whose precise date can be determined. When a charter is extant as a contemporary copy, then it is brought here according to its own date and placed in chronological order accordingly. After the ordinal number, there follows the modernised date of the charter and, if it exists, the place where the charter was sealed and dated. There follows a Latin Regesta before each transcription, in which the legal action is described along with the name of the issuer. After that, the form in which the charter is extant is given, whether as an original, as a transcription in another charter, as a summary or as a mention. Signatures of the archival collection sunder which the charters are kept are also given. If the charter in question is not from the Hungarian National Archive then we have used the corresponding serial number from the Archive of Diplomatic Photographs (Diplomatikai Fényképgyűjtemény), a collection which contains photographs of medieval charters kept in foreign archives. In cases where mentions of other comites terrestres Crisienses can be found in other charters we have included the relevant reference. In original charters we have provided information on the material on which the charter is written (parchment or paper) and its measurements in centimetres, where it was dated and the mode of sealing. Later or contemporary notes on the back of the charter are also given in the apparatus. The appearance of a charter is described only in the cases of those charters which were in any way damaged. If a charter survives in the original but also receives mention in other sources then we have added any relevant information to the original charter. After this the charter is published in extenso, or, if the charter is known only by mention, in the form of a regestum. These are supplemented with bibliographical notes on relevant publications. If the charters do not contain transcripts of other charters then they are produced in the form of a single paragraph. When charters contain transcripts then we have extracted and published them separately, and in their place is added a note referring to the number under which 27
