Diplomatarium comitum terrestrium Crisiensium (1274-1439) Nine originals are not extant and they are known only through contemporary copies in other charters. Only one of them was transcribed by an official who was not also the comes terrestris: the charter in question is that of comes Paul, son of Ban Stephen, of Križevci, and Demetrius, son of John, comes terrestris Crisiensis, from 23 September 1340, which was copied in a charter of Ban Mikes Ákos of Slavonia of 1344. The contents of two charters are known to us only through the early modern elenchus. In total, 12 charters issued by the comites terrestres Crisienses are known only by mentions in other charters. Most of charters are published here for the first time, though some of them, which were published earlier within larger series (such as Smičiklas' Codex Diplomatics), are given here again to ease the access for the readers and future researchers of this problematics. However, in such cases, the text was transcribed again from the original. The main purpose of this work is a critical edition of the extant documents of the comites terrestres of Križevci from the medieval period. For better understanding of the research topic to which the documents refer to, at the beginning of the work, a short introduction is added, in which are explained the basic questions regarding the history of the comites terrestres of Križevci. Therefore, in the introduction is brought an overview of previous research of both Hungarian and Croatian scholarship, ordered chronologically. Besides that, the introductory study contains also a description of the activities of the comites terrestres, their identification according to their kindreds or families (when it is possible to reconstruct), as well as diplomatic analysis of the charters they have issued. It would be interesting to research many other questions, as the process and the calendar of the election of the comites terrestres. The contents of the charter are offering a wide spectrum of research topics regarding legal and social history of the castle-warriors, on the basis of the Križevci example. It would be interesting to research here legal procedures on the field, especially those dealing with the functioning of a kindred and its cohesion (visible through the formulas of accept, assumptio onerum, etc.), and the physical appearance of the legal acts themselves (the presence of homo noster during the land transactions). Yet, at this moment, this would lead our story too far, so by editing these documents we are relegating these issues for future study. For the time being, we are suggesting the reader to peruse detailed bibliography, which follows the introductory study. The extent and position of the castle district of Križevci in medieval Slavonia can be seen on the maps following the text. This project is a product of cooperation between two research projects from two academies - the Research Group for Studying Medieval Hun16
