SUMMARY Dr. Kálniczky László National Archives of Hungary mikrofilm collation inventory of parisch registers More than 20 years elapsed since that the National Archives of Hungary published its finding aid about its collection of microfilm copies of parish registers up to 1st of October 1895 (edited by Margit Judák, Levéltári Leltárak 72., Budapest, 1997). This volume is a widely completed and revised version of this which contains the changes that have occurred since then, of course. The National Archives of Hungary is going to provide the users of this collections with a reliable new finding aid which makes their work easier. The parish registers, according to the rules being in force as well as to the international trend concerning the protection of privacy, are accessible free of charge for anyone. This finding aid is the summary of the records of a homogeneous and relatively large group of sub-fonds, the microfilms of parish registers (management group of fonds "X" in the archive). Most of the registers were microfilmed between 1959-1971. In this period the National Archives of Hungary was microfilming, on the initiative of the Archival Department of the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, all the parish registers created before 1st of October 1895 (the date of the introduction of the state registering) for the Genealogical Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. So the collection of microfilms of parish (and to some extent state) registers was born due to this "Mormon Microfilming Project". Nowadays the registers exceed many times the above mentioned time limit. Both the negative and the positive films have been kept by the microfilm collection of the National Archives of Hungary. A part of the microfilms was made of the duplicates compulsorily kept in the county archives since 1828 or got through international microfilm exchange or donation. The parish registers have been the most used films of the whole collection from the beginning. For the time being the two third of the users of the reading room of the National Archives of Hungary (7037 Budapest, Bécsi út 314-324.) requests such film rolls. This publication is not only justified by the large extent and the homogeneous character of the collection but also because it can be considered as a closed collection. This means that we do not expect considerable acquisition in the future. The summary of the records contains the title, the reference code, the year range, the extent (number of frames), the number of the storage units (film rolls) belonging to the sub-fonds as well as the names of the affiliated churches or of other places mentioned in the register, the time of building or reconstruction of the church or synagogue, its patron saint, etc. As regards the method of searching if the user does not find the data looked for in the chosen register, it is recommended to look through the registers of the neighbouring churches, too because the names of affiliated churches may refer only to the birth records. Places might change (e.g. they became independent or merged into other places) for several reasons, and the registers might be transferred to other place because of ecclesiastical reorganisation, too. We must point out to the future users of the collection that the language of the records up to the middle of the last century was generally Latin, German and Slavonic, the use of Hungarian was limited. Reading the old records may be difficult, sometimes it needs special skills. For
