The seal was described by imperial notary Aliottus as he was making a copy of a 1217 charter of Andrew II in 1266: Istud authenticum sacrum privilegium ... bullatum cum serico rubeo et pendenti bulla aurea, in qua ex una parte apparebat Imago Regis coronati sedentis, et tenentis in una manu virgam cum lilio desuper et in alia tenens pomum, litteris ex uno latere signa ad modum lune, et stelle, et ex altero signum ad modum solis taliter circum scripta: ANDREAS DI GRA VNGIE DAM CHOAE RAVE SVIE LODOMERIE Q REX Ex altera quidam parte patebat figura ad modi sicuti ad fascias et in tribus ex fasciis apparebat figure bini ad modum leonunculorum respiciendum unum alterum parvo scutulo mediante, in qualibus et in fascia inferiori apparebat ymago quasi parvi leonis aspicientis retro se talibus litteris circumscripta: SIGILLVM SECVUNDI ANDREE TERCII BELE REGIS FILII (quoted by Kropf 1896, p. 134). Andrew II (1205-1235) Third great seal 1229-1235 diam: 110 mm The seal clause of a 1229 charter tells of the causes and circumstances behind the making of the new royal seal: Lit igitur hec a nobis deliberacione regia facta donacio nec longa temporum canicie dilui, nec insoptio malignacium impetu nostris nostrorumque successorum temporibus retractari valeat, presenti pagine commendavimus ac sigillo nostro privilegiali novo, quod in prejudicium prioris cassandum parari fecimus in generacionum generaciones illibate observandum regia auctoritate roboravimus (Smiciklas III, p. 319; Szentpétery 1916, p. 6). The three lines of the legend are separated by lines. The text is punctuated by double dots, and contains uncial letters (n, m, v, t) and ligatures (AN, AR, AL, AC, AM, VE, RV).
