Andrew II (1205-1235) First double seal before 1213 -1235 fragment: 45 x 40 mm The first double-sided wax seal in the Árpád era. Its front composition follows the representation of the king on Andrew IPs first great seal, used until 1213. Besides the matching position of the arms and form of the robes, the two pieces are linked by the style of the figure. The throne is a simplified version of its precursor. The disposition of the figurái and heraldic elements could have been based on Emeric’s gold bull. Its banded shield adorned with running beasts (lions) is also similar. It differs in the number of bars, however, and even more strikingly in the order of the legend: whereas the reference to legitimate origins is on the front of Emeric’s seal and the royal titles are listed only on the reverse, the words referring to legitimacy on Andrew IPs seal have been relegated to the back, and his likeness on the front is surrounded by the names of the kingdoms he ruled. Supporting the view that it dates from before 1213 is the absence of Galicia and Lodomeria from the list of kingdoms on the front, i.e. the legend matches that on the first great seal, used before 1213. Legend on front (after Szentpétery 1916): ANDREAS D(E)I GRACIA VNGARIE DALMACIE CROACIE RAME S(ER)VIE REX on reverse: SIGILLVM SECVNDI ANDREE REGIS TERCII BELE REGIS FILII Originals: Budapest, Hungarian National Archives, DL 775, DL 61128.
