Materials and methods The conga hutia populations were sampled from the north and the south of the Isle of Youth and Cienaga de Zapata ("mainland" Cuba) during several expeditions from 1987 to 1989. Eighteen specimens were captured in the northern localities: Estera del Capitán, Punta Gorda, Cayo Monos, Estera del Soldado and Laguna de Pica Pica. Nineteen individuals for morphological studies and fifty for biochemical analyses were taken from the southern part of the island, in Hato de Milán, Rincón del Guanal, Carapachibey and Punta del Este. The specimens from Ciénaga de Zapata (14 for morphological studies and 30 for biochemical determination) were captured in Majagua and Molina. External characters Morphological characters were measured to the nearest mm with a tape measure and a vernier caliper, following Cockrum (1962): total length (TL), head and body length (HBL), tail length (LT), length of the back leg (LL), also ear height (EH). Each animal was also weighed (W in kg). The relation of the foresaid tail, ear and leg lengths to body length (TB, EB, LB, respectively) and the condition index (K=VV/TL 3 ) (Davis & Hall 1951), the latter expressed in percentage, were also calculated. Craneometric characters (56) used by Kratochvil et al.
