Museology

Zoltán SZOMBATH Results and discussions The history of collection The first pieces were purchased from the General Association of Hunters and Anglers (AGVPS) in Bucharest, before 1958 (by the curator István Konya). At that time the Museum did not have a specialized taxidermist employee. After 1967, Museum hired a taxidermist (the author) who was entrusted to begin preserving and compiling the mammal collection. Once Mr. Szombath graduated from taxidermy classes, he began preparing small mammal study skins or naturalized specimens. After expanding the Natural Science Department, several large pieces were naturalized using the dermoplasty method. These large pieces were displayed in the permanent exhibition which opened on February 16, 1988. Large animals (wolves, deer) were purchased from hunters, unprepared specimes, or have been received from the local zoo. Subsequently, the museum bought deer, chamois, wild boar trophies, and a bearskin with the head, prepared as a wall carpet. Trophies received as a donation do not achieve the requirements for medals, but they are evidence of hunting in different stages of development. Some of the trophies purchased won gold, silver or bronze medals at various national hunting exhibitions. The main exhibition currently exhibits 26 naturalized mammals, 16 skulls and one deer trophy (Cervus elaphus). (Fig. 9, 5, 6, 8, 7, 10) Several pieces were used during temporary exhibitions organized by the Natural Sciences Department in the main building of museum, at the “Fondul Plastic” Targu-Mure§ rooms and at The Medieval Fortress. Some of these displays were organized in collaboration with the Association of Hunters and Anglers and local hunters in town. The touring temporary exhibitions, in Reghin, Ludu? and Tärnäveni included some specimens from the mammals collection of the Museum. In 1990 the deer trophy harvested by the engineer Brateanu Mihail at Glodeni, Mure§ county, in the fall of 1989, was donated to museum from the Targu-Murej Forestry Inspectorate. In June 1995, the trophy was submitted to the national exhibition in Oradea. This same trophy was included to an international exhibition in Bucharest in 1997, where a gold medal was awarded.
