NEW DATA ON LARVAL DEVELOPMENT AND SPREAD OF THE SPECIES CALLERGATES GAILLARD О TI, CHEVROLAT, 1854 (COLEOPTERA, CERAMBYCIDAE) IN THE ISLAND OF CYPRUS Petru-Vasile ISTRATE Colegiul National “Alexandria Papiu Ilarian”, str. Bernady György nr 12, RO-540072 Targu-Mure$, forest_dog_yellow@yahoo.com Abstract: This paper aims to contribute to a better knowledge of the biology of the species Callergates gaillardoti, a Capricorn beetle (Cerambyx) from the Prioninae subfamily and to extend the area of distribution of this species in the Middle East. Several larvae were collected from a trunk of Pinus brutia, in the Troodos Mountains, Cyprus. We have brought them to Romania and reproducing their natural living conditions we surveyed the larval development and the recorded the adult emergence. Information was obtained about the chamber position within the trunk, the materials used in building its walls, the shape and size of the adult emergence gallery and the adult emergence period under the specified artificial growth conditions. Keywords: prioninae, dead wood, pine, gallery exit Introduction Callergates gaillardoti (Chevrolat, 1854) is a Palestino-Taurian element belonging to the family Cerambycidae, the Prioninae subfamily, being first described by Chevrolat in 1854 [1], based on specimens found close to Saida / Sidon, Lebanon. It is spread in the Middle East, being reported in Turkey, Antalya, Adana (Adlbauer, 1988; V. Demelt 1963) and leél (SvÁcha & Danilevsky, 1986), Lebanon (Chevrolat, 1854), (Sama & Rapuzzi, 2000), Syria, (Rejzek et ah, 2003) and the Asian countries. In Europe, it was only found in Greece, the Rhodes islands, Samos (Welnicki & Przewozny) [4] and Lesbos (Drumont & Dauber, 2011), [2] which are very close to the coast of Anatolia. It has also been reported in western Cyprus (Sama, 1994). The species Callergates gaillardoti belongs to the Callergates genus, Lameere 1906, being closely related to Ergates. Both types have only one representative. The genus Ergates includes the species Ergatesfaber, Linnaeus, 1767, spread over a larger area, Western Palearctic orTurano-Europeo- Mediterranean, which includes Europe, extending east to Transcaucasia, North Africa, Turkey, Syria. Callergates gaillardoti differs from Ergates faber in several morphological characters, such as length of the first antennal segment, which in case of Callergates gaillardoti goes beyond the lower edge of the eye, which does not occur with Ergates faber. Besides, with the first species the third antennal segment is thickened and provided with denticles. This is missing with Ergates fiber. The pronotum has thorns / prickles on the lateral side of Callergates gaillardoti, and is devoid of thorns with Ergates faber. [3] M A R I S I A, XXXIII-XXXIV, p. 139-146
