DISTAFFS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE ETHNOGRAPHICAL MUSEUM FROM REGHIN Spinning is an occupation attested ever since the Iron Age, due to archaeological discoveries occurred throughout whole country, discoveries that revealed whorls made of burnt clay, stone or bone. Wood distaffs of reduced dimensions, held by spinners are mentioned later on, during antiquity, materials destined for clothes being remembered also by ancient writers. The collections of the Ethnographical Museum from Reghin comprise 54 distaffs. Typologically they are simple, round, having the staff in shape of spear; we also encounter long distaffs which were fastened between the floor of the house and ceiling, but also distaffs with base, specific to the Hungarians. Next to artistic quality expressed by decoration, that of symbol of works and crafts, the distaff also holds the attribute of document, which results from inscriptions incised on these objects. Distaff as ethnographical display remains actual, either it is used as tool in every day life in traditional household for spinning the woolen or 51
