Paharul ritual in folclorul románesc SZENIK, Ilona; MÁRZA, Traian; BEJENARIU, Mircea; PETRESCU, Gheorghe, Folclor muzical din zona Huedinului, w Cluj, 1978 VADUVA, Ofelia, Magia darului, Editura Enciclopedicä, Bucuresti, *99 7 THE RITUAL GLASS IN ROMANIAN FOLKLORE Our study, based on a rich material, tries a monographic approach, in Romanian carol, of an interesting and ancient folk motif, the ritual glass. In the context of the monographic research, the motif is approach in all aspects: dissemination, owners, occasions and traditions of use, mythical symbolism, prescriptions refer to preservation and transmission of this ceremonial object. In the approach of this motif, I had to observe the two stages of the motif circulation: one pre-Christian, which preserved itself in oldest forms, and the second, from a later stage, when the motif suffered a Christianization process, resulting a fusion between pre-Christian and Christian. In the first part I analized the motif circulation on the entire Romanian space, the owners and the occasions of use of the ritual glass. I assigned a proper space to the Christianization process of the motif, which generated the sizing of the motif complexity. An extended space of our study is reserved for mythical and symbolic analyze of the motif, for the decoding of the symbols and for the functions that are appeared in its use, in several occasions: holidays, feasts, parties, libations, etc. The last part of our study is reserved to the traditional prescriptions connected to the preservation and the transmission of this ceremonial object, which marks once more the importance of the ritual glass in the rural colectivities. Our research is based on the comparative principle, the elements analized were compared both in the Romanian folk context and in the universal one. 45
