Aurelian POPESCU to be a part of the exhibition called “The Evolution of Life”. The only big disadvantage of this collection is given by the fact that the place of origin remains unknown for virtually all the samples. Conclusions Out of the data presented so far with respect to the paleontological collection known as “Ion Stänoiu”, we can infer the following conclusions: i. the collection has a small number of items - namely, 150; ii. it has extreme systemic diversity and large stratigraphic range of samples; iii. due to its diversity, it is suitable for a large spectrum of exhibitions focusing on fossils, as well as for certain activities typical for museums: conferences, presentations etc; iv. although the elements making up the collection are well preserved, with respect to many of them the place of origin is unknown, which represents a major inconvenient. In final analysis, I can conclude that “Ion Stänoiu” is a collection which can be deemed desirable for any museum. REFERENCES 1. COLECTIA PALEONTOLOGICÄ „ION STÄNOIU” DIN PATRIMONIUL MUZEULUI OLTENIEI CRAIOVA (Rezumat) Colectia paleontologicä “Ion Stänoiu” a intrat in patrimoniul Sectiei de §tiintele Naturii a Muzeului Olteniei Craiova ín martié 1955. Colectia a fost vándutá muzeului de cätre domnul dr. Ion Stänoiu (1927-2008), profesor la Universitatea din Craiova, cunoscut pentru lucrärile sale despre fluturii din Oltenia. Cele 150 de piese fosile constituie о colectie micä raportat la numärul celor cuprinse in alte colectii ale muzeului. Valoarea colectiei constä in marea varietate a pieselor componente, atát din punct de vedere sistematic, cat ji din cel al várstei geologice. In inventarul colectiei intálnim plante (de exemplu ferigi arborescente - Lepidodendron aculeatum), protozoare (numuliti — Nummulites intermedia), graptolid (Bohemograptus bohemicus), trilobid (Conocoryphes sulzeri), corali (Calamopora spongites), brahiopode (Terebratula reticularis), echinide (Pentacrinus cingulatus), viermi (Serpula spirulea), gastropode (Actaeonella sp.), bivalve (Pectunculus obovatus), amoniti (Ammonites triplicatus), belemniti (Belemnites sp.), pejti (Girodus sp.) $i mamifere (Halitherium sp.). Practic, fosilele din colectia „Ion Stänoiu” acoperä aproape fiecare perioadä a Paleozoicului, Mezozoicului §i Neozoicului: Conocoryphes sulzeri — Cambrian, Orthoceras sp. — Ordovician, Graptolithes bohemicus — Silurian, Neuropteris sp. — Carbonifer, Encrinus liliifiormis — Triasic, Diceras arietinum — Jurasic, Elyppurites sp. — Cretacic, Nummulites perforatus - Eocén, Carcharodon gracilis — Oligocen, Pyrulla condita — Miocén etc. Marea varietate sistematicä §i vasta acoperire temporalä a facut ca numeroase piese din aceastä colectie sä fie folosite de-а lungul timpului la realizarea majoritätii expozitiilor de paleontologie ale Sectiei de §tiintele Naturii (actualmente Serviciul §tiintele Naturii) a Muzeului Olteniei. Intre 1988 $i 2004, colectia Stänoiu a cunoscut о perioadä continuä de expunere, multe dintre piesele componente fiind selectate pentru a face parte din expozitia permanentä „Evolutia vietii”. 160
