Rezi Botond, Nagy József-Gábor: Rescue Excavations at Chinari "Mociar" (Mureş County)

88 REZI BOTOND, NAGY JÓZSEF-GÁBOR survey. The first one was measured in an area with high pottery concentration, the second in the west side of the settlement to see the edge of the settlement and possible fortification, the third between the first two. The last sections were measured according to the survey data, which led to the founding of three features. Sections Description Section 1, with the dimensions of 3 x 5 m, was laid out on the north-south direction. The numbering of the squares began from the south profile. The maximum depth was at 0.82 m, where we reached the sterile soil. In the first 0.20 m we found few potteries, but the section was rich in archaeological material, daub and charcoal. At 0.50 m from the west profile, near the 3 m square, we found a daub concentration, named feature C001. Section 2, with the dimensions of 2 x 10 m, was laid out on the east-west direction. The numbering of the squares began from the east profile. At a depth of 0.35 m, we reached the sterile yellow clay. The section offered few potteries. We were unable to identify any features. Section 3, with the dimensions of 3 x 5 m, was laid out on the north-south direction. The numbering of the squares began from the south profile. The plough layer had no archaeological materials. At a depth of 0.54 m we reached the sterile soil. The section offered few potteries. We were unable to identify any features. Section 4, with the dimensions of 3 x 7 m, was laid out on the east-west direction. The numbering of the squares began from the east profile. The layout of the section was based on the magnetometer surveys. At a depth of 0.54 m we reached the sterile yellow clay. On both of the short sides of the section wall, based on the high concentration of finds we could mark two features, C002 on the east profile and C003, on the west profile. The section was rich in finds, mainly pottery, daub and charcoal. The finds started to appear from the top of the plough layer. Section 5, had the dimensions of 3 x 3 m, the numbering of the squares began from the south profile. At a depth of 0.54 m we found the sterile soil. Near the 3 m square at a depth of 0.25 m, we discovered a layer of pottery fragments, incomplete pots and daub, same as in the other features. It was named feature C004. The section was rich in finds, mainly pottery, daub and charcoal. Compared to S4 the plough zone doesn’t have a high concentration of archaeological material. Feature Description The excavation led to the discovery of four features, because of the hard, compacted soil the features couldn’t be identified at the outline level. The ploughing disturbed the upper part of the features. C001 was found in Si, near the 3 m square, at 0.50 m from the west profile, at a depth of 0.60 m. With the size of 0.60 x 0.50 m, it had an irregular circular form. Because of the compacted soil, we could not see the exact outline of the feature and it was marked only by the presence of pottery fragments. The archaeological material consisted of ceramic fragments, daub, burned stones, grindstone fragments and animal bones. In the south-west corner of the pit we discovered a small black restorable vessel (Fig. XV/55). After sectioning the pit had 0.13 m in depth.
