ASPECTS REGARDING THE CONTRIBUTION OF I 7th CENTURY FUNERAL SERMON TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISCOURSE ON DEATH The inventory of themes concerning burial oratory productions allow us to observe the ideas that came as a decisive contribution to the religion inspired discourse on death. It is also important to underline the fact, that the message of burial homiletic components had structured itself constantly on three main pillars: a) the reality of death that obliges an interrogation on the inevitable end; b) the contrast between the afterlife destiny differentiated of those who have sinned and of the "righteous"; c) assuming the individual responsibility through a behavior imposed by the Christian moral law to gain forgiveness. Homiletic literature, that wins consistency from the beginning of 17th century, have concentrated mostly on a few motives derived from aspects that are linked to the level of lived (witnessed) death: so, the sermon does not miss elements like vainness of life, drama of departure, death as the only certitude during its moment of happening, fear of the unknown, need of consolation, etc. Towards, main themes that gathered all funeral rhetoric pedagogy lie as basis for important knowledge for life. So, the productions analyzed, are using very famous themes, such as: death as "payment" for the original sin, memento mori, ubi sunt, equalizing death that does not make differences. The affirmed themes are developed not only in association with the moment of death, but mostly with its implications concerning the quality of afterlife and the chances of final rescue. We consider that the synthetic inventory of used themes during the funeral sermon can complete an investigation procedure regarding attitudes generated by death's proximity, mostly when, for a long period religion owned the role of "death's largest manager".
