418 MELINTE $ERBAN NICOLAE SULICÄ - AN ERUDITE SCHOLAR - SKETCH OF A PORTRAIT - (Summary) Lover of people and culture, patriot and scholar, man of a surprising intuition, discoverer of Romanian language and literature old monuments, teacher of a great subtlety and an easy improvising public speaker, Nicolae Sulicä was a great humanist educated in the discipline of great classics of the ancient cultures. Among many languages he spoke Greek, Latin, Slavonic, German, French and Hungarian, things that helped him a lot in deciphering documents and also in studies of comparative literature about: the sources of the first Romanian Catechisms, the influence of the Greek-Latin Classicism on Eminescu and the translation -for the very first time in Romania- of some poems, especially those belonging to Eminescu, in Latin. Many of his observations were later confirmed by researches. Born in Brasov (he lived between 14th of January 1877 and the 6th of April 1949), he lived and worked between the World Wars in Tirgu-Mure§, he publiched school textbooks, history works, the history of the Romanian language and literature, folklore being a truly wellknown scholar.
