58 NICOLAE GUDEA, ANDREI ZRÍNYI 8 N. Gudea — A. Zrínyi, ín Epigraphica. Travaux dediées au VII—e Congres International d’epigraphie grecque et latiné, Bucurajti, 1977 p. 223—232. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MILITARY HISTORY OF THE ROMAN DACIA 2. Ala I. Gallorum et Bosporanorum On the basis of the epigraphical brick-material found at Criste?ti (jud. Mure?), to which all the archeological and epigraphical information connected with the Ala I Gallorum et Bosporanorum were added, the authors tried to monographically present the history of this unit during its being garrisoned in Dacia Superior, making an attempt in correcting and completing the data which are to be found in the old repertories of the Roman troops from Dacia (Cichorius, Wagner, Szilágyi, Christescu, Benes, Russu). Having this aim, the unity was presented according to the following 13 succesive prints: 1. the area of recruitations of the unit; 2. the datum of the formation of the alia and the way it was formed; 3. the places where it was garrisoned before dts coming to Dacia; 4. the mentioning of the last garrison before coming to Dacia; 5. the datum of the arrival to Dacia Superior; 6. the name of the unity and the way it was formulated in inscriptions, military diplomáé and stamps on the roof tiles and bricks; 7. the size of the unity and its tactical character; 8. the duration of its being garrisoned in Dacia Superior and the classification of roof tiles and bricks; 10. changes in the place of being garrisoned in the province; 11. the military operations it took part of; 12. the etnical componence of the unity as it is evident from the epigraphical material; 13 bibliography. The authors stated that the basic and permanent residence of the ala I Gallorum et Bosporanorum was the castrum from Criste?ti situated in the interior, behind the fortifications on the east limes of the province Dacia Superior. All the samped roof tiles and bricks, a series of inscriptions and a military diploma which were discovered, concentrate here. The^inscripttlons mentioning the name of the unity discovered at Vétel (M'icia) or in the proximity of this centre does not attest a moving there, but they could be related to a change of place of the unity connected with the actions of the actions of the province’s army against some attacks from the West (perhaps the marcomanic wars). The inscriptions from Geoaglu and Alba Iulia do not allow any suppositions connected with the being garrisoned of the unity on these places. The first one was, probably, raised by a person from the unity who was at a bathing cure while the second, funerary one, was raised by a veteran. Ala I Gallorum et Bosporanorum did no longer move to an other castrum of the province, and no longer left Dacia. It was garrisoned here, probably until the disintegration of the province.
