56 VALERIU LAZAR 40 THE COTOFENI SETTLEMENT OF $INCAI (MURES COUNTY) (Summary) The author presents here a chapter of a monograph study concerning the Transylvanian settlments on terraced heights of the Cotofeni Culture, entitled: „Archeological diggings at the ’Pagan Fortress’ of ipincai. Here, we can see only the first part of the settlement’s study, i. e., the author’s diggings performed between 1974—1977. After the presentation of the characteristics of the terraced heights belonging to the Cotofeni Culture in Transylvania, the author describes the geomorphological structure of the Sincai locality, the topographical location of the settlement, and the history of the discoveries. Then a detalied description of the diggings is given, as well as, the stratigraphy of the settlement, the terraces, surface lodgings, hovels, dwellings, and the discovered holes. The pottery, stone-objects, as well as, the silex, bone, horn and copper ones, and the synthetic considerations concerning the settlement will be the subject matter of some following articles. The richness and variety of the archeological vestiges dicovered at Sincai inscribe the „Pagan Fortress“ settlement as one of the most important settlements on terraced heights of the Cotofeni Culture in Transylvania. Alongside other similar settlements, that of Sincai brings important documentary contributions regarding the passing period from the neolithic to the bronze age.
