1 1 Lucky Hungarians I HelpingHungarians The “lucky Hungarians ” came to this resort As it happened, we wanted to get away from the hustle and noise of the busy city surrounding, so we went to a quiet place. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary as much as we could because of our son Justin wasn’t with us. Naturally in the cold of the winter one only seeks a spot where it is warm. Then one needs a stretch of a nice sandy beach, no telephone, no newspaper, no super markets, and can’t leave it out, no cooking. We were sure that we will not run into some friends, or who knows - somebodies. First thing at the airport waiting to embark we heard a couple speaking Hungarian. It happens to me that I butt in when I hear speaking the MAGYAR. The couple came from New York, and they were also heading to the Dominic Republic. So I said hallo and talked to them in normal Hungarian. The response went OK, but after a few sentences it switched over to English. I kept doing my Hungarian and he stuck to his English. Probably trying to impress me with his English until I switched to it too. Then he had to leave in a hurry. I never saw him after. The resort (whoooo was it good!!!) went beautifully. Warm weather, good food, fine water in the ocean and the pool. The resort was organized in three sections. One day we went for lunch in the middle one. Here Claudia tells me that she heard people speaking Hungarian. Well, I got drawn into it again. I slowly went around the tables, and I found them. They came from Budapest, Miskolc and Pécs. A group of 24 with kids. I sat down at the table without being invited. The most exciting thing I found out that they were lucky Hungarians. Originally they wanted to go to Thailand, but for some technical glitch they couldn’t make it, and then chose the Carribian. Had they gone to Thailand, they would had been hit by the Tsunami, and we know that many people on vacation there lost their life. We talked lengthy, and that was it because we were leaving next day. We had a good feeling that in the horrendous tragedy these Hungarians with there children were on the safe side. I tried to keep an eye on what the Hungarians are doing to help the people in Asia. There are the helping Hungarians, a group of doctors and medical staff, including medicine in a short time organized them self and took off. I happened to find some pictures that verify their help.
