The Batthyány children with each of his 10 children. Even important visitors would have to wait, as he could not be interrupted at these times. He played with the children, made candy and whittled with them .It's a mysterywhere he found the time, but he was an accomplished pastry chef, repaired clocks, organized a driving school, developed his own film in the bathtub, played the piano and organ, and was an amateur astronomer. In addition to being a caring husband and father, Dr. Batthyány had a great sense of humor, and could be the life of the party. In 1929, he was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder. An operation was performed in a Viennese clinic, but he suffered terribly for 14 months. Despite excruciating pain, he was resigned to the will of God, and demonstrated heroic patience in his illness. While he was in the clinic, Dr. Batthyány's wife had to have a serious operation, for which she had to travel to Berlin, and one of his daughters became a patient in the same clinic where he was. Thus it was his daughter Blanka who stayed with him for most of the 14 months he spent in the Viennese clinic, and we know the details of his illness from the journal she kept. After many complications, Dr. László Batthyány-Strattmann died on January 22, 1931. He was considered a saint even during his lifetime, and his cause for beatification was begun in 1944. However , his case was suspended when the Russians occupied Hungary at the end of World War II and the Communists took over. The process was revived in the 1980's when a novena for the intercession of Dr. Batthyány- Strattmann was circulated in Hungarian and German. Beatification, the ceremony by which a person is officially declared by the Church to be a model of Christian living, requires a documented miracle. In the case of Dr. László Batthyány-Strattmann, the required miracle involved a father of a family who, apparently healthy , suddenly fell ill and was diagnosed with advanced (metastasized) cancer. Surgery was performed, but the doctor told the patient's wife that her husband did not have much longer to live. The wife, in-laws, friends and acquaintances began the novena for the intercession of Dr. Batthyány- Strattmann. Soon the patient improved, and the doctors determined that he was completely healed. Following stringent investigation, and after waiting the The stained glass window in the Franciscan church in Szombathely required 12 years, the Church determined that this cure had been rapid, complete, lasting and not explainable scientifically. Consequently , Dr. László Batthyány- Strattmann, the "doctor of the poor", was beatified at St. Peter's in Rome on March 23, 2003 in the presence of some of his 26 grandchildren and thousands of Hungarian pilgrims. He had changed his family's motto "With fidelity and courage" to "With fidelity and charity." His whole life was an embodiment of that motto.
