Judge Kurmay as Decon at his church it happened during World War II, he with all the part timers became a full time employee. He stayed with the Bullard Company as a supervisor until his retirement. During the post war depression, Paul and Bertha operated the West End Bakery in Bridgeport. The Kurmay family was very generous and would not allow anyone to go hungry or destitute in their community if they could help. All the time Paul was involved with various career moves he never stopped pursuing the big love of his life which was music. With his beautiful, and by this time trained voice he sang at many local functions. He served his own church, St. Stephens on Spruce Street, and was guest soloist of many events at other churches. He especially liked weddings, and was a favorite for all these events. His voice training opened the door for stage productions too. Paul appeared in operettas such as The Student Prince, Dessert Song and Maytime. His singing was carried on local radio stations and also in New York. He also appeared as a soloist at the Madison Square Garden. Paul Kurmay’s favorite singing location was at his friends’ - Bill and Vernie Sarays Little Hungary Restaurant in the West End of Bridgeport. He and the Erdőss Orchestra entertained there regularly. He belonged to many clubs and societies locally and in New York. Despite being a Hungarian, he was on the list of the German and the Swedish Club. The Vendéglő Recording Company, Broadway, New York, the distributors of foreign records internationally recorded and distributed Paul’s records. Paul was very invold with the company and eventually he became the owner of it. Paul’s enterprising never seemed to come to an end. After his retirement from the Bullard Company he became a Real Estate Broker. Just to keep busy he was owner of the Old Well Restaurant in Norwalk. At the time of the Hungarian revolution Paul and Bertha sponsored many refugees. They provided them with homes, jobs, and support until they could manage by themselves. Their packages of clothing and supplies to Hungary were regular shipments. Bertha also enlisted the help of her cousin, Steve Kenhart who owned the Tunxis Hill Pharmacy and had him send medical supplies. Paul Kurmay was always proud of his family but, regrettably, did not live to see his own name prefaced by the title "Judge" This honor befell on his grandson Paul Kurmay who became Judge of Probate in Stratford and later Director of Probate Judges in the State of Connecticut. His musical talent wasn’t lost. Inherited by his nephew, Alex Macar, his sister Rose's son. Alex and his wife, Evelyn, both became professional singers, and also had an orchestra consisting of members of their own family. Alex always remembered the encouragement of his Uncle Paul. Paul was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed his family and friends. Paul and Bertha had many friends and they entertained lavishly. His favorite form of relaxation was to go fishing. He devoted much of his time to his grandchildren who kept him busy by enlisting his aid in their endless round of activities.” This is the short story of a talented and active Hungarian who came to America. \ PÜNKÖSDI RÓZSA BÁL Jkmiual 0tßse CxBai/ June 9, 2001, Saturday Happy hour at 7:00, followed by a Hungarian Dinner at the Bessemer Center, 2200 North Ave, Bridgeport.
