Souvenir sheets were (and still are) often issued — primarily for sale to stamp collectors. Each stamp of a souvenir sheet is valid for postage, but the combination is usually considered too beautiful to tear apart and put to use on letters. Semipostals - such as the recent U.S. breast cancer stamp — have a part of their proceeds go toward a charitable cause. In this case the surcharge for charity was equal to the stamps postal value. The six stamps of the souvenir sheet illustrate: Stephen as a Christian missionary; Stephen as a victorious warrior; Stephen seated upon his throne; Stephen offering his crown to the Virgin; Stephen receiving bishops and monks; Stephen, Gizella, and their son, Imre; and Stephen on his bier. Last January 1 - the very beginning of this millennium year - the Hungarian post office issued two stamps to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Hungarian statehood.^) Their denominations were 30 and (2) St. Stephen on the Eucharist Sheet. (4) New issues. St. Stephen s and Gizella s image frome the coronation robe (7) Ten stamps make up the Hungarian History Sheet. 40 forint. Several months later, these stamps were reissued in denominations of 28 and 34 forint to accommodate postal rate changes. Of course, all collectors are not stamp collectors. A cousin living in Hungary - who visited us recently here in the U.S. - is a coin collector. So his gift to me on his visit was a coin (actually it's a commemorative medal). It is vermeil (i.e. gold plated silver) and commemorates the 1000th anniversary of Hungarian statehood. He tells me that only 2000 pieces were minted, in observance of the year 2000. (6) The front (obverse, using collectors' terminology) shows István and Gizella in their coronation regalia. The reverse shows Stephen dedicating the nation to the Virgin Mary. With that, I will sign off from this little philatelic tour of the 1000th anniversary of Hungarian statehood. UBSCRJPTJDj 'J - GjlfT - SCJ-JQLARSJ-JJP Every year, around this time , we turn to our readers to consider subscribing to the Magyar News. Our goal is on one hand to help with the financing of of this monthly publication; on the other hand is to organize the administration that goes with the mailing. The importance of subscribing is that the money covers the mailing and also the cost of printing the copy we send out to the given address. If we have the subscriptions from January to December, then we could print up the envelopes in one bulk for the whole year. Please consider. At this time of the year we offer to handle the subscription, for a friend or relative, as a gift. For this we need the name and address of both parties. We send out a nicely designed Gift Certificate that also includes the name of the sender. It becomes a Christmas present. The American Hungarian Heritage Association every year supports local collage students, who live in our area, with the Mary Katona Scholarship Fund.
