I For decades there were two major Hungarian balls every year in this area. The Hubertusz was in the fall and the Cafe Budapest in the spring. Unfortunately the spring ball organized by the Hungarian Veterans Association doesn’t exist any more. The Cafe Budapest still goes on, thanks to the leaders of the American Hungarian Pannónia Club. It is held at the Inn at Longshore in Westport, where the setting with the tree-lined road leading to it is a reminder of landscapes in Hungary. This dinner dance is a traditional, most enjoyable event, and the proceeds benefit Hungarian students studying at colleges. Judit Balogh, president of the club greeted the participants, Dr. Balázs Somogy was the MC. Nelly Ádamkovics was the “Bál anya” (mother of the ball). She was in charge of organizing it also she had the honor to give permission to open the ball. It is a tradition to introduce the young ladies who come into age at this time, the debutants. This year they were Kristine Horváth, Ildikó Török, Catharene Jobbágy, and Katalin Hajnal (visiting from Hungary). They opened the dance with their escorts, first dancing the walz and after that the csárdás. The music was provided by Continental Orchestra led by Kálmán Magyar, Jr. Also four members of the Életfa dance group presented the Hungarian folkdance, the Csürdöngölös. An art exhibit was set up on the side balcony showing the beautiful paintings of Dr. István Varga. At midnight there was a drawing of many valuable prizes. The first prize was two round trip tickets to Budapest from MALÉV; Second prize was a painting by Dr. István Varga; two third prizes of Hungarian wine from award winning Bodvin Selection. There were many other interesting prizes. Now is the time to put it on your calender for next year so you will not miss this traditional Hungarian dinner-dance next year. It is good food, good music and good company. Joseph F.
