NAME OF I II i: DAY DAY OF THE NAME Name-days and traditions To help catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about them with the help of Joseph Stiber. Some names have only one designated day, then some may have five. You might have to work on this. We will also try to incorporate the significant days of the month. These will give some incentive for doing traditional things, or as an almanac, calling for awareness or sorting out what should be done on a certain day. SIGNIFICANT DAYS OF APRIL: This month usually deals with Easter. As we know the date changes every year. Palm Sunday is a religious day. The fresh shoots of some trees are forced into early budding. These, or in lucky places three palm leaves are blessed. In the folk tradition colorful ribbons are tied on these and in a very dignified manner they walk around the village with it. Then there is the “kiszehajtás”. They make a full size figure of straw, show it around and throw it into the water or bum it, hoping that this will chase bad out of the village and will keep the girls beautiful. Good Friday is the day for strict fasting. What we would call it is time for spring cleaning. The crow was included, because on this day the crow had to wash its young, trying to get them white. On Easter Sunday after church services PETER A. Naturally there is the blessed ham, eggs and other goodies. Easter Monday the young men went to “sprinkle” the girls. Nowadays it is done with a nice perfume bottle, but in former times the tradition was to help the girl out to the well and soak her with freshly drawn water. The best thing about it was that the boys were invited into the house and treated, also toasted each other with wine. Tuesday in some places the girls tried to soak the boys, but this hasn’t seemed to continue. 24th, György day the herdsmen had to sign-up or make a contract for the summer Name Days of April 01. / Hugó 02. / Ottoká 03. / Richárd, Buda 04. / Izidor 05. / Vince, Irén 06. / Biborka, Vilmos 07. / Herman, János 08. / Dénes 09. / Ágost, Erhard 10. / Zsolt 11. / Leó, Glória 12. / Gyula 13. / Hermina, Ida, Márton 14. / Tibor, Tiborc 15. /Tas 16. / Bernadett, Enikő, Csongor 17. / Rudolf 18. / Andrea, Irma 19. / Tivadar, Emma 20. / Töhötöm 21. / Anzelm, Konrád 22. / Csilla, Noémi 23. / Béla 24. / György 25. / Márk, Ányos 26. / Ervin, Áron 27. / Zita, Marianna 28. / Valéria 29. / Lenke, Péter 30. / Katalin This is the last of our nameday series.
