NAME OF THE DAY DAY OF THE NAME Name-days and traditions To help catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about them with the help of Joseph Stiber. Some names have only one designated day, then some may have five. You might have to work on this. We will also try to incorporate the significant days of the month. These will give some incentive of doing traditional things, or as an almanac, calls for awareness or sorts out what should be done on a certain day. SIGNIFICANT DAYS OF SEPTEMBER: Let us start with the good one. Egyed is on the first day of the month. If you are preparing for a “disznó-tor” then you have to start fattening the pig on this day. When you go to the super-market you should inquire whether the farmer adhered to this date. First we have to clear up the days of Lőrinc. We had one on August 10, but the real one is September 5. By this day you should harvest the watermelon. If you Don’t then Lőrinc will do a nasty thing in it and it will become soft and watery. This would be the last day to go to the beach, but recently the “vénasszonyok nyara” proves to be more pleasant for this kind of activity. The 17th doesn’t go by name, though they call it the Adoration of the Holy Cross. This is the day of the “búcsú”, the fair with religious connection, mostly held around the churches. This is also the day when, specially in Baranya, the girls to be sold go on display. They wear the fancy dresses walking around the booths of the fair and boys confirm their acquaintances or make new ones. Later the parents of the two parties meet eachother. The day of Mihály, on the 29th, is the beginning in Central-Europe of the fall. This is the end for having the sheep out in the pasture. They bring die falk home and celebrate the event the proper Hungarian way. You may add your own family traditions and maybe share it with all of us.
