Grandmother of The Year Barbara Wendel and her grandson, Kyle, and Mother of The Year Lana Balichka. Sandra Stasko Sunday School superintendent(center). Nice tilings. Nice events. Nice happenings. Nice people. - The list should go on and on. There is hardly a day that is significant that is not proclaimed for some good reason. Among the best, probably the very best is Mother’s Day. We see it announced in the papers, on the TV, let us not leave out the old stand-by, the radio. Mothers are taken out for dinner, they receive a bouquet the grandchildren jump alover her. Just for fun. All the stores and giftshops, then the restaurants figure on a good profit from the special offerings that they have for the occasion This is all nice and helpful, but every year I enjoy an event where the community gets together to celebrate the mothers and grandmothers. The Sunday School at the United Church of Christ on North Avenue in Bridgeport chooses the mother of the year and die grandmother of the year. This past May at the regular Sunday church serv ice Sandy Stasko, superintendent of the school talked about the merit of the chosen mother and grandmother. By this time members of the congregation figure out who the recipients will be. Naturally they receive a personalized gift as a reminder of the event. This is what I refer to when I say - NICE. In a church founded by Hungarians the mothers receive great respect. In the Hungarian language there is a special word. “Édesanya”. This translates to “Sweetmother”. Hard to find a similar name in any other language. It’s Hungarian, it’s nice. iinAAfflinr. cvcATC upfiommfi eveim UPCOIIIIÍI6 IflflTI JULY 18.
