XAME OF THE DAY DAY OF THE AAME Name-days and traditions A s is known, the Hungarians cele/\ brate the name-day, in general, and -L JLnot the birthday. Being somewhat accostumed to the American culture, it is a bit strange for us to connect our name with a number on the calander. Anyhow, I was reminded of the old days and called some friends reminding them about their nameday and they were all appreciative. To help others to catch up on name-days we will keep giving information about it with the help of Joseph Stiber. You should know that some names have only one designated day, then some have five. You might have to work on this. We will also tiy to incorporate the significant days of the month. These will give some incentive of doing traditional tilings, or as an almanac, calls for awareness or sorts out what should be done on a certain day. SIGNIFICANT DAYS OF JUNE: This is a pretty busy month. Pentecost is the time for summer to arrive. In some places they wait for this day to erect the May-pole. Also the youth name the royal couple. The Prince is the young man who excels in horse-back riding, wrestling and the like. The princess is chosen differently. The girls choose the youngest one. She is covered in a veil and a wreath is placed on her head. They sing the traditional song as they walk around the village. It is also advisable for the girls to gather the dew-drops on this dawn and take a bath in it. This adds to beauty and fertility. On the 8th, Medard, is the last frost carrying saint. On this day, according to the belief, the Great Flood started. This is why the sky of Medard is watchted. If it rains on this day then it will rain for forty more days Vid marks the time for the plants to reach maturity. On the 24th the youth of the village would go into the fields, build a fire and jump over it to gain cleanliness and secure a successful marriage. The participants chant and one by one everybody’s name is called. After the fire is extinguished and the fun and dancing starts. Peter and Pal is the day to start the harvest, and this will be celebrated by a ball. All of the above you could try at your own home.
