INVENTIONS WITH RED-WHITE-AND GREEN Our readers know that I am ready to jump and praise everything, big or small, that is Hungarian. I feel happy when I receive something big. I love it, it fills my soul. This time it has nothing to do with music, poetry, or the like. It is about inventions, that is to come up with something that never exsisted. Leave it to the Hungarians and they will break the record. This past summer in Geneva the world had a huge exhibit, the 25th annual, showing of the newest inventions. Forty four countries sent 672 inventions, the Hungarians were represented by 22, little more then the average. They harvested three gold, ten silver and nine bronze medals. All our inventions won awards and this put them into the book of records. It is the first time that all the inventions submitted by a country received awards. There were some technical ones that 1 don’t have the slightest idea of what they do. Mentioned were asincronized motor something, welding without heat, and a magical automobile (!??). This last one brought the Hungarians a special award besides the gold medal. A small lapel pin does the job of a sizable instrument. It measures the low levels of radiation and magnetic force. Janos Szollosi, the inventor, says that it helps noticing problems in one’s immediate environment. It is especially important for pregnant mothers in their first trimester. Another Hungarian invention also deals with the magnetic force. Miklós Zrínyi made a magnet that is not solid hard as we know it. It is a gel, it is flexible, wet and still magnetic. It is called an intelligent matter because it senses the environment and reacts to it. It behaves like the muscle, changes its volume and it has the possiblity to be used in robots, and probably to replace live tissues somewhere in the future. Dr. András Vedres, secretary general of the Hungarian Inventor’s Society remarked that the Hungarian market for new inven-Page 6 tions is limited. The big companies that would be able to make use of some of these, were owned by the government, so now they have to wait till the new private investments help them reach a proper level. J.F.B. From Warsaw Pact to NATO Three countries from the former Warsaw Pact block were asked to join NATO; Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary. Naturally they all decided to accept. Hungary went an extra step and asked its citizens in a referendum if they wanted to join. The result was positive. The circumstances are always unfavorable for the Hungarians. It seems like we have to be on some side. First it was on the Byzantine’s side, then on West Europe, followed by Austria, Germany, and in the near past, the Soviet Union. This time there is a special problem. Hungary is sandwiched between some unfriendly nations. The ten million Hungarians have on one side Romania with forty million, then up north Slovakia with a sizable military industry, also on the south the Serbs because they don’t look favorably at us as American troops are stationed on Hungarian land. At one time the Serbs flew across the border and dropped bombs on Hungarian villages. It might be considered some sort of security to “belong” somewhere, today it is NATO. X St. Vincent's Medical Center M0» MAIN STREET. BRIDGEPORT. CONI r Father Nemeth sent this letter > during his recent hospital stay to his parishioners. We all wish that his treatments will restore his health. Also, we all have him in our daily prayers. November 14, 1997 My dear Parishioners, As I write this letter nty thoughts are of Jesus in the Garden before his Passion. I feel even more blessed than Our Lord, because you have not left me alone in this trial. Your cards and letters have been so much strength as X deal with this cross I must bear - but you have lightened it with your love and concern. I think of each of you every day. When a person is brought to a one day at a time existence, nothing is of matter except love of family and friends--and isn’t that the nature of God-love. Even in this healing isolation, your cards and letters bring much comfort and tears of joy. I love each of you so much and I just state the fact for this letter will be saturated in tears. But I’m a very blessed priest to have served you in my own imperfect way - and at this time seek forgiveness from anyone who may think I have offended them. On this day I praise God for having each of you as a friend. I’m such a blessed man. My gratitude to the parishioners, CYO, CCD, Societies and everyone who has extended that little extra to make the parish function. You are such a treasure! I also am grateful to Fr. Emerick and Fr. Capastran for all they are doing for St. Emery's. What a parish--what good people-- what a gift you are! I ask God's healing love for you and your families - and we will never give up hope I Love you so much! Fr. Robert
