GELLERT (GERARD) - c. 980 -1046 - bom in Venice, he joined the Benedictines and eventually was elected abbot of the monastery of San Giorgio there. On his way to the Holy Land, bad weather forced him ashore on the Dalmatian coast where he met a Hungarian abbot who induced him to come to Hungary to do missionary work. The landing of St. Margaret at Queens- FerryA.D. 1068 King St. István appointed him tutor to his son Imre, whom he trained for 7 years. Thereupon he withdrew to live the life of a hermit, until St. István appointed him bishop of the newly erected diocese of Csanad. Gellert worked energetically as a missionary, and was an able organizer of his diocese. Upon the death of St. István, some Hungarian leaders who were still pagan revolted against Christianity. They attacked Gellert and hurled him down the hill in Buda which today bears his name. According to legend, Gellert's body floated upstream in testimony to his holy life and martyr's death. Silver herma by the Kolozsvári brothers depicting St. László ST. MARGIT (MARGARET) OF SCOTLAND - 1047 - 1093 - granddaughter of St. István, she lived in Hungary for the first 10 years of her life. Her family returned to England in 1057. After the Battle of Hastings, Margaret's brother, the boy Edgar was chosen as ruler in an attempt to maintain England's independence. However, he had no chance against William the Conqueror, and so Edgar, his mother and sister Margaret fled to Scotland. There Margaret married King Malcolm III who was known for his cruelty. But Margaret's example caused Malcolm to change his ways. They had 8 children, whom Margaret raised in exemplary fashion. One of them, David, has been called one of the best Scottish kings, and was also revered as a saint by his people. Margaret called a synod of the Scottish Church and used her influence to bring certain customs into line with the general Church discipline of the West. She built churches and monasteries and was beloved for her special care of orphans and the poor. She died four days after her husband and oldest son were killed in battle by the English. Her daughter Matilda became the wife of Henry I, so that the present British royal house honors her as their ancestress. ST. LÁSZLÓ - c. 1046 - 1095 - son of King Bela I. László excelled in piety, military skill and physical prowess. He became king in 1077, repelled the invading Cumanians and secured internal order. In the dispute over investitures, László stood staunchly on the side of the Pope. He was a chivalrous ruler and the model of the Christian knight. He was elected to lead the first international crusade to wrest the Holy Land from the infidels. Many legends have been woven around the figure of St. László. He is often depicted rescuing a Hungarian girl from a Cumanian horseman. BLESSED PIROSKA (aka ST. IRENEA) -7-1134- daughter of St. László. She was married to the Byzantine emperor John Komnenos. She founded many churches and monasteries, and is depicted in one of the mosaics of the basilica of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
