Magyar Ház - Venice, Florida In our recent visit to Venice, Florida, I discovered a very active group of American Hungarians in their newly built meeting house, the Magyar Ház. Before travelling there I was informed by the editor of the Magyar News of its existence. So one morning I decided to look for it. I found it in North Venice, about a half mile from the highway. I was greeted by a very charming lady, Irén Lőrincz, who had come to decorate the auditorium’s Christmas tree. She told me that the Magyar Ház draws its members from as far North as Sarasota, and south from Engelwood and Port Charlotte. They are a Christian Social Society and hold both Protestant and Roman Catholic Services. On Sunday before Christmas, following the worship conducted by the Protestant minister, Rev. Péter Paul Bodor, the Ladies Guild prepared and served holiday dinner in the auditorium. During the month of December the organization sponsored a dinner dance and also a New Years Eve event at which they served Disznótoros Vacsora (Pork Supper). The menu included hurka, kolbász, párolt káposzta and töpörtyűs pogácsa. At midnight the traditional kocsonya was offered. This worship center and auditorium is located on more than five acres of land. It is in an area where development has started to accelerate. The building contains a large auditorium and kitchen. The members meet here regularly. The signs to the building, the shutters and the window flowerboxes are painted Hungarian style. Inside, the walls display many photographs and other memorabilia. It was a pleasure to be able to visit briefly with these people who are busy working to preserve their Hungarian culture, traditions and customs. James P. Pall Every day in our community we see how difficult it is to have Hungarians gather. We are very happy to learn about communities where they are . able to establish new beginnings. In i Balboa Park, California they built a \ house and in Venice, Florida they ! combined Protestants and Catholics i as Hungarian Christian Society, with \ the social life of the Petőfi Cultural \ Association in their new building.
