THE AMERICAN HUNGARIAN PANNÓNIA CLUB OFFERS 1997 SCHOLARSHIPS As every year the Pannónia Club holds the springtime Hungarian dinner dance, the Cafe Budapest. The proceeds are designated for scholarships. The applications can be requested from Sára Matolcsy (203)268-7369. These scholarships are designed for students of Hungarian back ground who participate in our local Hungarian community life, who are good in their studies and are entering into higher education. The application with the requirements is due by December 1, 1996. The scholarships will be awarded at the Hungarian Christmas Program. FIRST YOU HAVE TO OPEN YOUR HEART There is a struggle going on in the field of economics. Students of our Hungarian community every year face a rising cost of tuition and at the same time Hungarian organizations have to work harder to raise money for well deserved scholarships. Those who were participating in this activity of the American Hungarian Heritage Association, or who were carefully watching these activities, know that Chef Szál limáry Louis Szathmáry, Ph. D. 1919-1996 an outstanding Hungarian, a world reknowned famous culinary expert and chef, author of several books, hundreds of articles, lecturer at many universities, a bibliophile whose collection of 22,000 culinary books is the largest of of hospitality culture in the world passed away on October 4, 1996 in Chicago. He was a friend to many of us and to the Hungarian people. His memory will stay with us. In an upcoming issue we will pay tribute to his life. without the personal help of individuals, it seems to be impossible to achieve the worthy goals. It is hard to slip in edge-wise one more dinner dance or other fundraising events among the many that are popping up like mushrooms. To keep up our commitment of our annual scholarship rewardings we have to öy all possible avenues. First of all we ask you to open your hearts and consider joining the American Hungarian Heritage Association (A.H.H.A.). Your membership and your generous donation will benefit our scholarship program. A.H.H.A. will also try other fields of fund raising. Since all the work is done by volunteers, the money raised will be used in full to support the students and our events. We will also try to take advantage of an offer where we will sell a book and receive a nice percentage. The book is something like a coupon collection. Most of it is connected to some form of entertainment, including restaurants and other dining establishments. The book and a card (for fancy restaurants) cost $30.00. The way it works: For fine dining you give the card with your creditcard to pay. In average with your guest you may save $15.00, but there are places where the saving is $24.00 at one meal. At casual restaurants, over 200 of them, you make half the savings. At informal dining, fast foods, about 500 of them, you could figure pay-one-get-two. There are plenty of other services from cruises, airfare, hotels to theaters, movies, ball games and many more. This fall we had a carproblem and had to rent one. Just on that we saved $30.00 besides the AAA and other legal discounts. The book was paid for and after that everything was just gravy Use it for dry cleaning, flowers or parking. Naturally there are some limitations, but consider the vast array of savings and besides you are supporting a good cause.
