“BY HUNGARY’S HOLY GOD DO WE SWEAR, DO WE SWEAR, THAT SERVILE CHAINS WE’LL NO MORE BEAR!” Bust of Sándor Petőfi by Gabriella Koszorús-Varsa These are lines from Sándor Petofi’s poem, the National Song. These are the words we mostly remember from the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Every year since, the Hungarian people paid their respect on March 15 in memory of the heroes and also the spirit of the historical event, even during the Communist Regime. The Communist rulers realized that the words of the poet are not just symbols of the past but it continues to live in the mind and souls of the Hungarian people. It is like a sword that is never put back into its sheath. Itexpresses the commitment of the people standing up for freedom, for self determination of the nation, and it is also hope for the future. We carry the names of the revolution leaders on our red-white-and-green flags. Kossuth, Petőfi, Vasvari, Görgey, Bem, Klapka and many others. The flag was there whenever the Hungarian people tried to fight oppression. It gave hope after WWII and lead the demonstration that grew into the 1956, October Revolution. The Hungarian people’s commitment to freedom is done with these names on their lips and the word of the poet “servile chains we’ll no more bear.” Bust of Lajos Kossuth by Gabriella F.
