Éva kedvesen kiszolgálta a fiút, vajat, mézet kent a zsemléjére, aztán igy szólt hozzá: — Most menjen le szépen és keresse meg az igazgatót. Én majd később lógok le, mintha az uccáról jönnék. — Azt hiszi, ezek nem tudják, hogy itt aludt? Éva bólintott: — Nem, mert Szepinek azt mondtam, hogy csak egy pilla­natra jöttem, fontos ügyben kell megvárnom magát. Éppen ak­kor váltották le, tehát nem lát­hatta, hogy mikor mentem el. De különben sem érdekel... Jimmy bámulta a lány el­szántságát és hidegvérét, aztán leballagott az irodába. A folyo­són az árgusszemü Patkósné jilt és kötögette végetnemérő gyap­­juharísnyáját. Jimmy megre­megett. Ha ez a vén satrafa nem moccan innen, okvetlenül meg­látja a szobájából kilépő Évát! De hogyan távolitsa el ? Mintegy véletlenül meglökte a kis asztal­kát és a vastag gombolyag legu­rult. Jimmy besie­tett az irodába, ahol Plom igaz­gató éppen a számlakönyvet ta­nulmányozta, gondterhes arccal. — Jóreggelt! — Á, mister Hurst! Hauduju­­du! — nyújtott kezet a vendég­nek, — parancsoljon helyet fog­lalni ! — Köszönöm, de sietek. A pénz miatt jöttem. Megtalálták a széfkulcsot? — Sajnos nem — pislogott Plom laposan, mint a békák. — Hívjanak lakatost. — Éppen erről van szó. Alap­szabályaink értelmében a széfet ilyen rendkívüli esetben nem nyithatjuk ki erőszakkal. Leg­alább is én egyedül nem intéz­kedhetett!... — Hát? — Igazgatósági ülést kell ösz­­szehivnom és csak amikor e­­gyüttesen megszavazzák, csinál­hatunk uj kulcsokat. Jimmy sokatmondó grimasz­­szal mérte végig az igazgatót és könnyen megfelelt volna neki, jelen esetben azonban nem bán­ta, hogy váratlan akadályok me­rültek fel. A széfben — bár bi­zalma a hotel igazgatóságában erősen megrendült — még min­dig jobb helyen van a pénze, mint a lány kezében. Kopogtak az ajtón és Éva lépett az irodá­­! ba. — Á, kezét csókolom! — lel­kendezett Plom és erőnek erejé­vel rácuppantotta nedves ajkát a lány sima, puha kezére. — Ke­gyedet most már úgyszólván mindennapos vend égőnknek tisztelhetjük! A lány eleresztette a célzást a füle mellett és Jimmyhez for­­j dúlt: — Felvette a kétezret? — Nem — felelte a fiú és el­magyarázta, hogy milyen nehéz­• ségek jöttek közbe. De Évát nem érdekelték az alapszabályok. — Kétezer dollár az tízezer pengő. Ugyebár? Nos, megtart­hatják a valutát, de adják ide a tízezer pengőt! Plom már ismerte az ifjú hölgy páratlan erélyét.
