SPORTS NEWS Hungarians defeat West Germany The Hungarian football eleven met West Germany in Hamburg in a preparatory game, proceeds to go to the victims of the launch disaster in October 1984. György Mezey, the Hungarian manager pointed out before the game that though the proceeds went to charity the intention was preparation for the world cup games, and of course winning as the standing of the teams demanded. And that was what actually happened. The game played in heavy rain, on a heavy, muddy ground was tough throughout. The Germans attacked more in the first half; Nyilasi was there at the end of a dangerous counter-attack in the 28th minute, but his shot missed. Further German attacks followed. In the second half Péter moved forward on the left, and scored with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty bot. Things speeded up after the goal. The Germans attacked, but the Hungarian defence held fast the ground firmly, and the result remained unchanged: West Germany 0, Hungary 1. Zsuzsa Oláh’s silver medal at the “Europa 12” table-tennis competition in Barcelona An invitation meeting of 12 outstanding male and female table-tennis players of Europe was held in Barcelona under the title of “Europa 12”. The competition represented an extraordinarily high standard, a promising preliminary of the coming world championship. Zsuzsa Oláh finished second with eight games won behind the unbeated Dutch Vrieskopp (11 wins). Winning the silver medal, Zsuzsa Oláh was the sole Hungarian at the games. No Hungarian men were there. Formula—I racing in Budapest after all? Róbert Zsolt reported in Magyar Nemzet that Hungary received a proposition from the managing body of Formula—I car races, FOCA (Federation of Car Builders) to hold Formula—I races in Budapest. FOCA had made a similar proposal earlier but—the race was to be held in the City Park—the Hungarian authorities objected for environment protection reasons. Now the People's Park, at a greater distance from the city centre, was suggested and this makes possible agreement more likely. Should things eventuate, there would be racing in Budapest in 1986 —said Bernard Ecclestone, the representative of FOCA. Hungarian success at the World Indoor Athletic Games At the World Indoor Athletic Games held for the first time in the Bercy sports hall of Paris two Hungarian successes were born: Xénia Siska won the women’s 60 meter hurdle in 8.03 second in front of two French girls, Elloy and Piquereau. In the qualifying heats Siska twice broke the Hungarian records: first 8.13 seconds, then with 8.00 seconds. Gyula Pálóczy finished second in the broad jump with 794 cm behind Jan Leitner (Czechoslovakia, 796 cm). Xénia Siska European Boxing Championships in Budapest. The European Boxing Championships will be held at the Budapest Sports Hall between 25th May and 2nd June this year. The Hungarian Boxing Federation already received nominations from England, Austria, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia. Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Holland. Yugoslavia, Poland, the GDR, West Germany, Norway, Italy, Rumania, Spain, Sweden, the Soviet Union. Turkey and of course, Hungary. Further nominations are expected from Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, and Wales. Sports facilities for the deaf The Sports Association of the Deaf in Budapest has been operating for more than seventy years. The construction of new facilities has begun near the modest—and antiquated— sports ground of the Association at Könyves Kálmán körút. In the first phase of the programme two training halls, a gymnastics hall, dressing rooms and a surgery for the sports doctor are being built. A football ground, tennis courts, and a handball hall is planned. The extensive building programme of the Association is made possible by a government subsidy and wide public support; Budapest enterprises and youth organizations have offered financial assistance and voluntary work. Fairness Prizes Ten Hungarian sportsmen received the 1984 fairness prizes from a committee presided over by dr. Jenő Kamuti. György Csepregi, a motor boat competitor received the prize for helping his opponents at a number of races with spare parts, and by repairing their boats. Two young industrial apprentices received the prize because they gave first aid to one of their injuried opponents during a three-day walk, not caring about their own placings. In the meantime the Debrecen sausages, the green pepper cut into slices, the tomato and the hot paprika are added with half of the wine, and it is all braised under a lid until the meat becomes tender. Take the sausages out when they become tender, and set them aside. Let the rest of the ingredients boil while there is water.
