1997 - Issue 3 MAGYAR HERALD PAGE 3 IN MEMÓRIÁM REV. EMERY S. JUHASZ 1923-1997 The Rev. Emery S. Juhasz, who immigrated to the United States in 1948 to escape Communist rule in his native Hungary, came to Cleveland in the summer of 1956 as pastor of the West Side Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran Church. A few months later, he welcomed more than 75 refugees of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution to the city, helping them find jobs and housing. In 1956, Rev. Juhasz began conducting Hungarian-language church services on the radio in Cleveland and serving as secretary of the Hungarian Conference of the United Lutheran Church in America/Lutheran in America. He continued those duties after retiring from his pastorate in 1991 and moving to what had been his vacation home in Hide-A-Way Hills, a gated community outside of Lancaster, Ohio. Rev. Juhasz served churches in Portland, Oregan, Gifford, Ohio and Buffalo, New York, before coming to Cleveland. From 1963 to 1991, Rev. Juhasz was editor of the Eros Var, a monthly Hungarian-Lutheran publication. He belonged to the Magyar Club, while living in Cleveland. Services were held at the West Side Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3245 West 98th Street, Cleveland, on November 22, 1997. Rev. Juhasz is survived by his wife Edna (nee Papp), 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Festive Dinner Honoring Dr. Dezső Ladányi Our Cleveland Magyar Club held a great and impressive dinner in honor of our Club's historian, Dr. Dezső Ladányi, on November8,1997 at the Budapest Restaurant. The invocation was pronounced by the editor of the Magyar Herald. Frank Dobos, president, eloquently spoke about all the great accomplishments of the celebrant, former president and hard-working officer of the Club throughout almost the entire history of the Club. Then the celebrant was presented a silver-plate from the Club by the president and Ruth Toth, treasurer. More than one-hundred attended the excellent celebration. Due honor was given in dignified formalities to the well-deserving celebrant; one of the greatest ones in the 73-year long history of the Cleveland Magyar Club.- Ad multos annos! -Ruth Toth, Dr. Dezső Ladányi, Alice Ladányi, Dr. Stephen Szabo, Frank Dobos Recently Passed Events The ITT-OTT Hungarian Fraternal Association held its 30th Annual convention from august 16 to 23 at Zalesky (OH). A Magyar Hét minden esztendőben - és ezéven is - kiemelkedő eseménye volt amerikai magyar életünknek. (Mozgató lelke kezdettől fogva a mi Böjtös Lászlónk a mi diaspóránk sikján. Magyar Clubunk több izbeni elnöke, lelkes építő munkása, a Magyar Köztársaság helybeli tb. konzula, városunk nyugati és keleti oldalán ékeskedő 2 református templomunknak építőmérnöke. Sajnos az evévi ITT-OTT konferenciáról hazatérőben Böjtös László és Dr. Borándi Gyula vendég előadó autóbalesetben súlyos sérülést szenvedtek és Borándiné életét vesztette. Az ITT-OTT Baráti Közösség, valamint a Magyar Club, szörnyű megdöbbenéssel vette a lesújtó hírt. A két férfi hosszú kórházi tartózkodás után teljesen felépült. Ez a döbbenetes hír felemelő része. Lapunk részvét írására jöttek a következő sorok: „Nagyon köszönöm, hogy rámgondoltál testi és lelki nyomorúságom idején. Ezt az egész helyzetet, ami velem történt megérteni nem, csak elfogadni tudom. Ugyanúgy fogadom az Isteni kegyelmet, mely életre ítélt. A második kórház, a Cleveland Clinic-i létem első napjaiban hozzám került a,, Vetés és aratás" evangéliumi folyóirat. 97/1 száma Kopár hegyoldalon két felfele néző ember és a 25 zsoltár 3-4 verse: „Utaidat Uram, ismertesd meg velem, ösvényeidre taníts meg engem! vezess hűségesen, és taníts engem, mert Te vagy Szabadító Istenem!" Ezzel indultam vissza az életbe... Pap-gyermeknek a tollából az élet misztikus útján a fenti szavak mindannyiunk számára életetadó üzenetet közölnek!
