2nd QUARTER, 1991 MAGYAR HERALD Page 3 Mrs. Otto Friedrich Hungarian Woman of the Year MARIA STRADA FRIEDRICH was born in Budapest and lived in Heves County, Hungary, where she attended first grade. At the end of World War II, her family fled to Germany, ahead of the advancing Russian troops. She continued her education there and in Austria, until the family emigrated to the United States in 1951. They settled in Cleveland, where she finished high school at John Adams High School, and then attended Western Reserve University, graduating with a BA degree in Chemistry. She also obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from John Carroll University. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Pittsburgh-Cleveland Catalysis Club, lota Sigma Pi Women Chemists’ Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society, and was named Career Woman of the Year by the Cleveland YWCA in 1981. Mrs. Friedrich has spent most of her working life at BP America (formerly The Standard Oil Company), where she is a chemist in the Catalysis Research Department. She has various patents and publications in her field of interest, and has attended national and international scientific meetings and conferences. She has also hosted several visiting chemists of Hungary. Maria has been active in the Hungarian scouting movement since the 1950’s, and is one of the honorary presidents of the Hungarian Scout Association. She is a founding member of Hungarian Girl Scout Troop #33 in Cleveland, and served as its troop leader for 10 years. She is also past president of American Hungarian Friends of Scouting, which sponsors the Cleveland Hungarian scout troops and which organizes annual fundraisers, such as the Cserkészbál and Cserkésznap. She was on the organizing committee of the 1989 Pax Ting Commemorative Girl Scout Jamboree, and is one of the authors of the Hungarian Girl Scout Handbook. She is a 1975 recipient of the Count Teleki medal, and is also a member of the Saint Ladislaus Lovag Society, where she received the Grand Cross in 1989. Mrs. Friedrich is one of the directors of the United Hungarian Societies, in on the board of the Hungarian Heritage Society and is on the Parish Council of St. Emeric Church. ‘Shortly after coming to Cleveland, Maria met Otto Friedrich, and they were married in 1957. They have two daughters, Anne Marie and Kathryn, and two little grandsons, Gregory and Matthew.
