MR. EDWARD K 14500 SOUTH ........ __ CLEVELAND OH 44*20 \ /niAr.HV PARK BND. •Page“* 3rd QUARTER, 1990 Little Hungary the Very First again! Hungary voted to end role in Warsaw Pact The New Parlament voted overwhelmingly on June 26, to immediately suspend Hungary’s activities in the Warsaw Pact and eventually withdraw from the East bloc military alliance. The 232-0 vote — with four abstentions — again puts Hungary in conflict with the Soviet Union, which wants to maintain the organization as a political union. A similar declaration in 1956 prompted Soviet tanks to invade Hungary and cfush a popular uprising led by former Premier Imre Nagy. The Warsaw Pact has admitted that invasion was a mistake. The Parliament resolution called on the government to begin negotiations with the Warsaw Pact’s six other members to prepare for the planned withdrawal. The decision followed Prime Minister József Antall’s announcement June 9 that Hungary wants to “restore full sovereignity over the Hungarian armed forces”. Hungary made the very first step to remove the hated “Iron Curtain”, that seperated East and West. Tearing down the Berlin Wall soon followed, then all else in rapid succession. Present History certainly became the most interesting compulsory reading. Most West Germans favor slowing down German unification, according to a poll published in Stern magazine. Though most support eventual union, many fear haste will jeopardize their affluence, since East Germany will be heavily reliant on West German financial aid... Commenting on the plans of a Hungarian businessman to turn Budapest into the Bangkok of Eastern Europe, replete with brothels and “sex boats”, Interior Minister Balázs Horváth said prohibiting the scheme would be useless, “but we hope very much to create a society in which there is no demand for such services.” — Compiled by William Mathewson MAGYAR HERALD Published by The Magyar Club of Cleveland, Ohio President: DR.
