12. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ TO THE MEMBERS OF THE HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH IN AMERICA We are writing to inform you that we have been forced to close one of Hungary’s most important historical Christian buildings, the Reformed Church in Szikszó. It is in a perilous state, and requires much work if its complete destruction is to be prevented. You must understand that in Central and Eastern Europe a church building represents our historical path, our Christian confession and expresses the faithfulness of the Lord throughout the centuries since the Reformation. We hope that through this rebuilding the Lord may change the hearts of those in this large town, and that the church may be a centre of evangelism, of hope, and of missionary outreach. The work of reconstruction, thanks to the collaboration and sacrifice of our fellow Hungarian Christian brothers, has already begun. But in order to bring this work to completion, we are turning to our foreign Christian brothers and sisters, in hope that you might join and help us in this initiative. The church, which is 600 years old, is of great architectural significance. This historical monument is the only one of its kind in Hungary which remains in such a precarious condition. The roof and its timber frame are infested by fungus, and the walls are crumbling. The damage is such that a quick, partial, conservation program would not be viable: the entire roof and timber frame must be replaced. The church must be completely renovated, internally and externally, before it can be used again. For this reason, we established the Foundation for the Reconstruction of Szikszó Reformed Church, turning first to our fellow Hungarian countrymen, and now to our brothers and sisters overseas. We hope that there are enough benevolent and capable people in our country and beyond, in order that this church might be saved from being completely destroyed, and that we may work together with Christian brothers throughout the world to display unity and collaboration for a noble purpose, even in such a difficult situation. Please consider whether you can take part in this Christian joint effort. If you are able and ready to help, please send your support to the SZÍRT Foundation, account number B 84299 at the National Savings Bank (OTP) of Miskolc (Branch no. 279- 98029). Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information. We do hope that our common commitments and your support might be to the benefit of our spiritual life, and especially for the glory of God.
