Torok, dean MEDITATION ON LOVE During the Lenten season, it is important to focus on the amazing nature of divine love. Its infinite depth can be appreciated in the verse, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The boundlessness of God’s love is so great that John and the Early Church profess that, “God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (I John 4:16), and, “He who does not love does not know God; for God is love” (I John 4:8). What is clearly stated is that love is the very nature and essence of God. It is the very substance of divine life and, therefore, eternal life. This is why Paul declares that love is “the greatest” (I Corinthians 13:13). It is why love alone “never ends” (I Corinthians 13:8). Paul is not philosophizing here; he is making a definitive theological statement. When he advises us to “Make love your aim” (I Corinthians 14:1) and, “Let all that you do be done in love” (I Corinthians 16:14), Paul is urging us to participate
