MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 15. oldal the Sulyok College. As the treasurer of the Fund, I ask the sister churches for fund raising to help our Transylvanian fellow Christians’ education. In February, our dean, the Very Rev. Stefan M. Torok, made a canonica visitatio at the meeting of Church Council where he informed us about the life of our denominations. The most important event in March was when the Church Women United held a Hungarian Night in our Hall to give financial aid to the theological students who serve - or is going to serve - our churches. For this outstanding initiative of our Ladies and for their success, I recommend to other Women’s Guilds to organize similar events of charity. Also in March, the Reformed Church of Trenton invited me to attend a dinner honoring their new Pastor, Rev. Thomas Karla and his family. There I presented a lecture about the international importance of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. On May 2nd our church will host the annual Church Women United Conference and I invite all those concerned. We may reckon on a useful discussion of the issues that time. Regarding our church buildings I report that our old oil burner in the church basement has been changed to a new gas furnace. I am sorry to report the recent death of our blessed and gifted brother, Joseph Lenart, who always represented the gentle Christian love amongst us. After a prolonged suffering our Lord called him into the eternal home. Further more, just as I was writing this report, I got a phone call from our oldest member’s family that our beloved Mrs. Julia Katko had given her soul back to her Creator. May God be our comfort. Rev. Peter L. Toth PERTH AMBOY, NJ During the Lenten and Easter season our congregational life received an opportunity for Christian renewal. The four Hungarian congregations in Perth Amboy - one Roman catholic, one Greek Byzantine church and two Hungarian reformed churches - held joint mid-week Lenten services for the second year in a row. The services provided an opportunity for our people to worship together and declare to the world that we are all children of the same Heavenly Father, our Saviour and Lord is the same Jesus and who suffered and died for us, "That we may have life and have it more abundantly.” The pastors and priests served together in all occasions in the true spirit of ecumenism. Offerings from these midweek services were earmarked toward the newly organized Ecumenical School of Nagyvarad, (Erdély) Transylvania. The annual meeting of our congregation was held on February 14th. A covered dish dinner, honoring our newly elected officers and elders as well as our church organizations was held on March 20th. On March 7, seven of our elders and church members took part in the meetings of the Eastern Classis of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America in Bethlehem, PA. Our pastor is the Dean of the Eastern Classis and its Treasurer is Mr. Andrew C. Lovász, a member of our congregation. On March 15, we planned to commemorate the anniversary of the 1848 revolution again, jointly with the four Hungarian church organizations of Perth Amboy. However, due to the inclement weather, we had to postpone our celebrations to March 21 which included a flag raising ceremony in the front of City Hall of Perth Amboy. The John Calvin Magyar Reformed Church was the host of this year’s activities. On March 28, a special Tenebrae Service was observed at our English worship service with the church choir. It was truly an up-lifting experience, commemorating the suffering and the death of Christ. Everyone was impressed. Special thanks to the choir and the readers. With the coming of Easter, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of our worship opportunities. Holy Communion to our sick and shut-ins will be served from March 29 to April 3. On April 8, Maundy- Thursday English worship will be held at 7:00 PM. On April 9, there will be a Good-Friday Hungarian church service at 10:00 AM followed by a community service from 12:00 noon to 3:00 PM, depicting the three hours Jesus spent on the Cross. Meditations will be on the last seven words of Christ from the cross. On the same day, at 7:00 p.m., English worship service will be held at our church. On Easter Sunday, English service will begin at 9:00 AM, Hungarian service at 11:00 AM, Holy Communion will be observed at both divine services. Come, bring your family and friends and let us declare together the joyous news of the Saviour’s resurrection. Statistical information: On March 21, through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, we have received into the Christian Fellowship Taylor Brooke Anderson, infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Scott Anderson. We extend our congratulations to the family. Advanced information: Church Women Unites Conference on May 2, at Carteret, NJ. The Rev. Stefan M. Torok, Dean I
