MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 15. oldal It was not long ago that I finished my theological studies at the Raday College in Budapest. Following graduation, from October 1988 onwards for a period of five months, I was doing postgraduate studies of ecumenism at the Ecumenical Institute of the World Council of Churches at Chateau de Bossey, Switzerland. After I had returned to Hungary I worked for the Ecumenical Department of the Synod of the Reformed Church of Hungary. In the summer of 1990, I was an associate minister of the Budapest Kalvinter congregation. Afterwards, until my coming to the U.S., I served in the Reformed congregation at Verőce, a picturesque village of the Danube Bend. Since the very first minutes of my stay in the U.S.A., I have been filled with joy over the fact that so far away from Hungary, I can speak and preach in Hungarian, thus fostering the Hungarian heritage. How untrue it is what some said long ago: “Extra Hungáriám non est vita”(“Outside Hungary there is no life”!) The Rev. Thomas Karla New windows have been installed in the kitchen and Sunday School rooms, continuing a series of improvements in the church building. Rev. Stern participated in the community Thanksgiving service at Providence Presbyterian Church on November 22. An offering was taken for the Home for Aged Women in Burlington and the Cross Roots Halfway House for recovering substance abusers. Susie Boldizsár Szecsi passed away October 29. She is remembered fondly as are others who died this year: church members Sam Dezsy, Betty Genasky, Zoliié Varga and Anna Egyud, and former member Bernath Mulleny. We celebrated the marriage of Enikő Barna and Robert D. Gaskill, Jr. at the church on October 17th, with Rev. Stern performing the ceremony. We also welcomed Michael Gwynn, son of Peggy and Allan Gwynn, who was born on October 30. NEWS FROM ROEBLING The Hungarian Reformed Church in Roebling is keeping a busy schedule in the time leading up to Christmas. Special Advent candlelighting ceremonies are part of our worship service, with creative leadership from Georgiana Harkel and special participation by the children of the Sunday School. During the same period we are collecting canned goods for the needy and toys for children in the community. Other activities include the Women’s Guild bake sale on December 12, our kolbász sale on December 19, Christmas caroling, led by Michelle Scott also on December 19, and our Sunday School Christmas program during the worship service on December 20. Our church and Sunday School have had a special relationship for many years with Rev. Matthew, a missionary in Kerala, India. Again, this year we sent a donation to help him in his work, and our prayers go with him in the very difficult time India is now going through. Rev. Stern is teaching a confirmation class this year. There are three students John Barna, Megan Scott and Melissa D’Annunzio. The Women’s Guild has been hard at work this fall. They spent several weeks making noodles for sale. Soon after the completion of this successful project, they were back at work preparing for their Christmas bake sale. On December 13, the Guild held their Christmas dinner at the Tabernacle Inn.
