8. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ The Synod shall to the best of our abilities send assistance to these schools. The last item of the meeting was to prepare the meeting of the General Assembly of the Synod. Among the preparations, the Bishop’s Council acting as a Nominating Committee, thought about the officers elected by the Assembly, and in a long discussion recommended changes in the Constitution and By-Laws of the Church, and also recommended to accept some newly organized churches as mission congregations to the Synod. Many other small items were discussed in relations to the upcoming Synod Assembly. After a long day of meetnig, and breaking only for a short lunch the Bishop’s Council closed its quarterly meeting at 5:30 p.m. It is our hope, said Bishop Harsanyi, that our Annual Assembly will be successful and will provide an opportunity to all of our congregations to find each other, and above all, find the Head of the Church. MEETING OF THE EASTERN CLASSIS On Sunday, March 3rd, the Annual Assembly of the Eastern Classis of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America met at the Carteret, New Jersey Church. Registration was held from 2:30 p.m. and the meeting was opened by the Host Pastor, Rev. Peter Toth with a Devotional. The following congregations sent representatives: Bethlehem, PA; Roebling, NJ; Trenton, NJ; Linden, NJ; Washington, DC; Perth Amboy, NJ and Carteret, NJ host congregation. The Miami, Florida congregation was not represented, and also without representation was the mission congregation of Houston, Texas. The meeting was attended by 58 representatives. Besides the official delegates all in attendance were accepted as corresponding members. During the meeting of the Classis, ballots were opened by a special committee on the election of the Dean, Chief- Elder and members of the Judicial Commission. The Classis has re-elected Rev. Stefan M. Torok as Dean, Mr. Balint Balogh as Chief-Elder. Members of the Judicial Commissions: The Rev. Ambrus Batiz, The Rev. Stephen Kovács and the Rev. Barnabas Roczey, Mr. László Ruszkay, Mr. Charles Gabos and Mr. Joseph Bartha. The meeting also elected Rev. Edwin Stern and Miss Priscilla Hunyady as secretaries, and Mr. Andrew C. Lovász as its Treasurer. Also elected were the Rev. Dr. Dezső Abraham and Mrs. Elizabeth Novak as representatives to the Synod. During the assembly reports were given on the life of the congregations. The Dean gave a special report on the appeal forwarded by two members of the Miami congregation on elections. The Law Counselor of the Classis reviewed the appeal and instructed the Dean to the course in accordance of our By-Laws. Special greetings were extended by the following: Rev. Dr. Andrew Harsanyi, Bishop; Mr. Anthony C. Beke, Chief- Elder of the Synod. The Rev. Dr. Sándor Tenke, Dean of the Theological Seminary of Budapest, The Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz in behalf of the Eastern Classis of Calvin Synod, and The Rev. Alexander Forro, Dean of the New York Classis. The meeting was truly an opportunity to share in each others fellowship and concerns for our churches life. The evening brought further opportunity of fellowship, when all in attendance were invited by the host church for a delicious dinner. THE NEW LEADERSHIP OF THE REFORMED CHURCH IN HUNGARY In the course of the renewal of the life of the Reformed Church in Hungary a new electoral law was implemented. The results of the elections were successively published by the weekly church paper Reformátusok Lapja. Here we are listing the names of the new bishops and curators-in-chief (lay presidents). Trans-Tibiscan Church District. Dr. Elemér Kocsos bishop, Dr. Ákos Bodnár chief curator; Cis-Tibiscan Church District. Dr. István Mészáros bishop, Daniel Szabó chief curator; Cis-Danubian Church District. Dr. Lóránt Hegedűs bishop, Dr. Mihály Czine chief curator; Trans-Danubian Church District. Dr. Mihály Márkus bishop, Dr. Attila Kálmán chief curator. Some of the above named were elected on second ballots. On February 27 the new, 10th Synod of the Reformed Church in Hungary, elected its top leadership. Presiding Bishop: Dr. Lóránt Hegedűs, Presiding Chief Curator: Dr. Ákos Bodnár; Vice-Presidents: Bishop Dr. Mihály Márkus and Professor Dr. Mihály Czine. Second ballots were necessary. Applications must be submitted for the chiefs of the various synodal departments as well as for the editors-in-chief of the official church papers like Református Egyház, Reformátusok Lapja and Confessio. Magyar Church and The Hungarian Reformed Church in America prays for God’s blessing upon the leaders and the members of the new Synod as well as upon the new officers of the Church Districts.
