14. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ CARTERET, NJ Our Sunday School Christmas service was different this year, in that besides the nativity scene, the Confirmation Class presented 8 different nations’ customs of celebrating this special day. The nations were chosen according to the different nationality backgrounds of our own members. Following the service, the Men’s Club prepared a pancake breakfast for our children, and again, instead of the usual entertainment, the real, Hungarian Bishop Saint Nicholas visited us, calling each child by name, from his “big book,” asking personal questions. The devil was there also (krampusz) trying to lure away the children with candy, money, promises, poking them, but he was chased away, because we have only “good” children in our Sunday School. It was a day to remember. Christmas Eve was a full-house again, for the candlelight musical service, our organist Bill Schurr led a Choir of 12, and Rev. Nitsch sang a duet with Bunny Stasolla, 0 Holy Night and Ave Maria. Christmas Day retired Bishop Dezső Abraham shared the good news with us and assisted in the Holy Communion service, thus making this day again a special one. On New Year’s Day, traditionally we had the Open House in the Parsonage following the worship service, where in friendly Christian fellowship we wished each other a happy and healthy new year. Looking back at the year 1988, we are happy to report that it was a great year. We celebrated our 85th Anniversary, repainted the church, put new ceillings on in the Bethlen Hall, bought new stoves, installed fans — donated by István Gergely, finally finished the renewed Memorial Plaques and placed them in the vestibule of the church, thanks to the generous donation of Joseph Nagy Jr., in memory of his wife Franny. Twelve new pew Bibles were donated by Helen Dodge and children in memory of husband Kent. We had a successful Renovation Fund drive that netted close to $15,000. In the past 7 years we spent over $60,000 on renovations, and we managed to increase our total cash assets from $50,000 to $132,579.01. Receipts in 1988 were $85,762.99, expenses $76,953.11. Our Capital Improvement and Special Projects Fund from the lease of our West Carteret land to Hermann’s Sporting Goods grew to $32,445.92. Our success is due to the generous donations of our members, and the hard work of Pastor together with the Lorantffy Women’s Guild and Men’s Club, who did a tremendous job last year, and we thank you all for that. We especially thank Joe and Marge Kara for running the Atlantic City Bus trips twice weekly for the last 7 years, which is a major fundraiser for our Men’s Club. 1989 there is little change in our organizations, Marge DeStefano assumed again the presidency of the Lorantffy Women’s Guild with Mary Fischer as vice-president, Barbara Jenei treasurer and Kay Peters as secretary, Helen Sheridan as chaplain. In the Men’s Club Ernie Jenei is still the president, Roy Jensen vice-president, Rev. Nitsch secretary. In the Church Council lay leadership is no change, Leonard Sendelsky entered his 20th year as Chief Elder. We have some openings to the Council, so far Gabe Comba is the only new candidate, and we welcome him aboard. He will replace retiring Mrs. Walter (Alice) Kovács who was our Treasurer for years and help renew our financial administration. Thanks. We are looking forward to another great year, Hurka and Kolbász will be made on Feb. 6, 7; Valentine Dinner offered to the members of our Guild and Club members and spouses, by the Men’s Club. Our Annual Congregational meeting will be held on February 26, followed by an Installation Luncheon at Noon. Flea Market and Rummage Sale on April 6, 7, 8; Fish Dinner on May 5, etc. If you live in the Carteret area and do not attend church regularly, make a new year’s resolution to offer your life to God, and come and join our successful team! “If God be with us, who can be against us!” Vital Statistics: WEDDINGS: Craig Schneider and Catherine Starsiak on Nov. 12; Brenda Lillian Timari and Alexander Matthew Ijas on Dec. 10. May God bless their union! FUNERALS: Vera Czombos (84) on Nov. 22; Alex Fodor (58) on Dec. 2; Stephen Kovács (97) on Dec. 14. May they rest in peace. PERTH AMBOY, NJ Looking back upon the past Christmas holidays, and the past year, truly we can say that we have been blessed by God, kept in His special grace, as a congregation and as individuals. May His name be praised. Our Christmas observance was under average in attendance on Christmas Eve. However, on Christmas Day, the church was filled with worshipers, and Holy Communion was offered. Our Holiday’s assistant was Student Pastor Rev. István Nyeste from the New Brunswick Reformed Seminary. Holiday and year closing service on New Year’s Eve was helped with good participation by our members, on the
