MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 7. oldal MARTYRDOME IN ROME “A.D.” accepts the tradition that both Peter and Paul were martyred in Rome. It follows the Book of Acts in telling how the Church grew and spread through the empire. Thus, in the Christian prism, viewers will experience the “Jewishness” of the first Christians, the transformation of the Church from a modest band in an obscure part of the empire, to a force which utlimately saw the triumph of love “in spite of dungeon, fire and sword.” In “A.D .” viewers will hear the primitive preaching, the Kerygma: that Jesus, as prophesied in the Old Testament, lived, loved and taught according to the Scriptures, was crucified and raised from the dead, and gives his followers the Holy Spirit and the power of resurrection until his return to earth. Viewers will enter into the wretched schism and divisions as believers struggle with the questions of faithfulness. THE JOURNIES By land and sea “A.D.” traces the journies of the early messengers as the great Christian odyssey begins, a period, in which, as the title suggests, humankind came to mark the passing of time in the name of the Lord. THE JEWISH PRISM Looking through Jewish and Roman prisms, “A.D.” tells an equally comprehensive and detailed story. Seen through the Jewish prism, the viewer is introduced to the “schools” or parties in Judaism of the day. In the Jewish war, which breaks out at the end of the film, the Jews prove that what they had in common was more important than anything that divided them. One of the key Jewish figures is Rabbi Gamaliel the Elder, who in the film, as in Acts, noted that if the Christian venture is on man, “it will fall, but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it.” THE ROMAN EMPIRE Through the Roman prism “A.D.” presents a picture of an empire which had reached its height of power and property. Stretching from the northern reaches of Britain to the Euphrates, from the Rhine and Danube to the Atlas Mountains, it was, at least on the surface, a society with selfconfidence, and undoubted wealth and culture. “A.D.” depicts it as an empire morally in need of a world vision based on a history-entering God. “A.D.” shows that leaders and ordinary people alike longed for a meaningful religion, a firmer virtue. The simple faith of the Palestine teacher, with the message of God’s great love, made a winsome appeal in the moral ferment. CONVICTIONS ABOUT JESUS According to Dr. Gilbert, “A.D. will alert viewers to the first century convictions about Jesus, the joy that he stirred as Redeemer from sin, the corporate consciousness of belonging to the household of God, the duty of living by his rule and revelation, the power of faith in the face of great persecution, and the sense of excitement in the new faith provoked by the apostles. FOR BIBLE STORY Students of the Bible should find new illumination in the peak events in the Acts, as skilled actors faithfully bring the familiar stories to life with a power unique to film. In the film, “A.D.” presents the living organism that was destined to survive the Roman Empire and mould western civilization.” “A.D.” will be aired for a full week in prime time on NBC television, February 10-14, 1985. ■OOOOOÖOOOOOOOQQWDOOOOOOOOOOMOOOOOOOOOODOWOOOO««»» HORVÁTH ZSIGMOND LETT A SZLOVÁKIAI REFORMÁTUS EGYHÁZ ÚJ PÜSPÖKE A Szlovákiai Református Keresztyén Egyház hivatalos lapja a Kálvinista Szemle értesítése szerint Komáromban tartották meg a zsinati gyűlést, ahol is Ft. Horváth Zsigmondot, a helybeli lelkészt, választották meg új püspöknek. Nem lehet könnyű a Szlovákiában élő testvéreink sorsa, ha számba veszszük, hogy Ft. Varga Imre püspök halála után már pár éve húzódott az új püspök választás, amelyet csak most oldottak meg az egyház vezetői. Imádságban könyörgünk, hogy Isten adjon bölcsességet az egyház megválasztott új tisztviselőinek, akik a püspökkel együtt a hivatali esküt letették, hogy a gyülekezettket jól pásztorolják az ismert nehéz körülmények között is. FELSŐFOKÚ MAGYAR TANÍTÁS A MONTREALI MCGILL EGYETEMEN A Magyarországi Református Egyház kiadásában megjelenő „CONFESSIO” 1984-ik évi 3-ik számában részletes ismertetés jelent meg Dr. Komjáthy Aladár Montreali lelkipásztornak, az egyetemen végzett professzori- tanítói munkájáról. Ez az egyetemi szinten való magyar tanítás csak pár éves múltra tekint vissza, de sok eredményt ért el, ha a végzett diákok további tanulmányait és életútját kísérjük figyelemmel. Jelenleg is 25 tanuló van s ezen kívül még Torontóban van hasonló magyar nyelvű egyetemi szinten való tanítás. Dr. Komjáthy A KITÁNTORGOTT EGYHÁZ címen könyvet írt, mely nem sokára megjelenik. A könyv részleteit sorozatban a Reformátusok Lapja budapesti heti lap közli, melyet híveink nagy érdeklődéssel olvasnak.
