MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11 NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS AKRON, OHIO Our Good Friday combined worship service and the Easter Sunday services were very well attended by both con­gregation. 181 persons participated in the Holy Communion in our church, 25 in our Lorantffy Care Center and 8 in hospitals and homes. Our church in­come was close to 3,000 dollars during the holidays. On April 13th, Sunday afternoon the Doctors Orchestra played in the Lorantffy Care Center. The music in­cluded many Hungarian selections. After the program the 40 members band was invited to our Fellowship Hall and received a chicken paprikas dinner. The residents and patients of the Lorantffy Care Center enjoyed a memorable afternoon. The newest refugees arrived to our church from Austria. During the past 10 years we have sponsored 175 Hun­garian refugees and 3 south Vietnamese refugees. Our church income during the year of 1979: $64,216.36. Our church ex­penses (including the payments on the newly bought houses and property) $76,688.80. The income of our Lorantffy Care Center during 1979: $972,735.75, the expenses during the year: $956,449.69. Our present mortgage on our Care Center is $853,188. We are very thank­ful to our church members, friends and to every person who helped us with donations during the past year. May God bless everyone of them. Almighty God has richly blessed our Easter holiday services, our members, guest and visitors from far and near attended and participated in the Holy Communion. Many of our shut-in brethren received the Lord’s Supper in hospitals and in their homes. Christian Youth Fellowship had a few “bake-sales” for the benefit of an excursion to Toronto, Canada and also for the summer youth camp scheduled to be held July 19-26 in the Ligonier, Pa. area. The young people of our sis­ter church, Toledo, Ohio returned the visitation of our youth on Sunday, March 23rd. The Hungarian Folk Dance Group of our church, under the leadership of Mrs. Vilma Szabó, participated in the annual program of Hungarian Inde­pendence Day organized by the churches and societies of Detroit. Our organizations, the Ladies Aid, Dorcas Guild, Men’s Club, Golden Cir­cle Club, The Martha Circle, Choir, are busy with their regular activities. Statistics — Marriages: Susan Szalay and Michael Jeffrey, January 17th, Nancy Marie Reese and Robert J. Burgh III, February 23rd, were united in holy matrimony. Mr. and Mrs. Balint Balogh and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Toth donated toward the holy elements. On March 11th the Governor of Penn­sylvania presented a proclamation to the leaders of the Hungarian-Americans proclaiming March 15th as Kossuth Day and Hungarian Independence Day in Pennsylvania. The leaders of Wil­liam Penn and the Hungarian Re­formed Federation, the Hungarian leaders of Philadelphia and Rev. and Mrs. Louis J. Nagy participated on this celebration in Harrisburg, Pa. On March 23rd we remembered the 1848 fighting for freedom and inde­pendence. Our chief elder Mr. Balint Balogh greeted the Bethlehem and vi­cinity Hungarians. A speech was de­livered by the Rev. Louis J. Nagy. Mr. Steve Turoczy Jr. also participated in the program. The celebration took place in our Kálvin Hall. On March the 20th Rev. Nagy at­tended a briefing on inflation and energy policy in the White House, Washington, D.C. Mrs. John Szocsik moved back to her home, after a long illness, from the Leaders Nursing Home. On April 27th we go back to Day­light Savings Time. The pastor of the congregation will give a lecture at the meeting of the Eastern Ministerial Association. Mrs. Elizabeth Toth had a successful operation at Easton Hospital. CARTERET, N. J. After the election of elders here is the full list of the members of the church council: Michael Breza, Geza Budai, Stephen Dorko Sr., Alex George, Louis Hollo, Bela Kantor, Alice Kovács, Michael Kovács, Jr., Julius Lengyel, William Lukach, Ben Matto, Geza Megyesi, Clinton Miller, John Nemish, Bert Pokol, Lester Sabo, Edward Sa­­dowski, Leonard Sendelsky, Helen Sheridan, Louis Tömöri. The officers have been elected last year for a term of three years: Leonard Sendelsky chief elder, Bela Kantor chief elder, Michael Kovács, Jr. secretary, Geza Megyesi treasurer, Helen Sheridan fi­nancial secretary. The annual meeting raised the amount of “church dues” to $30 per family leaving the dues for retired couples at $18. We mourn the tragic death of Jolán Benga who taught the Hungarian em­broidery class with high artistic know­ledge and deep love. The classes con­tinue with Mrs. Elizabeth Medgyesi as their leader. The Junior Women’s Guild is plan­ning a bazaar for the last week-end in November. They get together weekly to prepare handicraft articles for the sale. The Annual Conference of United Church Women will be held May 18 in Carteret. The theme will be “God’s Covenant with Man and with the World in the Eighties.”
